I mean, sure, but Kylo is the type that likes to play with his food before he eats it. Only reason Vader was playing with Luke was to see how skilled he was and the fact that he didn't want to kill him. Once Luke got an actual strike in, he ended the duel within a second. Kylo did the same to Finn.

Fair enough, but it just seems strange to me that someone who can't use the force could hold their own in a light saber fight against a force user.

Why do so many people believe this? Other than one glancing blow, Kylo absolutely owned Finn in that fight. He was toying with him the whole time, even to the point of inserting his cross guard into his shoulder rather than just continuing the duel.
Exactly. At what point did Kylo look really bad against Finn? LINK The one time Finn got a lucky shot in and Kylo got serious and immediately ended the fight?

Finn didn't hold his own. He got his arse kicked.

"Hold his own" may have been a stretch, but I feel like he really shouldn't have been able to hit him at all.

I mean, if Kylo didn't want to toy with him, why didn't he just kill Finn the second he checked to see if Rey was ok? Yeah, Kylo needs Rey alive, but Finn, no he could just kill him. I'm sure he hasn't had a lightsaber fight in years, so he probably just wanted to enjoy it play softball with him.

Kylo Ren is reckless and entirely overcome by emotion. He's not a pragmatic killer like Vader was. Once Vader decides to kill someone, he doesn't milk it, he goes in for the kill. Kylo is much more conflicted about it. He wanted to say some parting words to Obi Wan after fricking up his body and he needed Luke alive, but in the EU he doesn't frick around.

Kylo is a shitty emo douche. He's better as a SNL Undercover Boss character than as a decent Star Wars villain. That says enough.

Remember that Ren had taken a gutshot from Chewie's bowcaster not long before that fight.

Wonder why he couldn't stop that shot in mid air? Would have been crazy if he had done that and then used the shot to kill Han, if Chewie had shot before they started fighting.

Because he just went through the biggest moment in his life where he murdered his own father. He little fricking distracted to say the least. It would be like blaming a huge badass getting killed by an assassin from behind when his father dies in front of him.

He should never take his mask off, loses any intimidating factor right there

Lost respect for him ever since he took his mask off. The mistique was gone.

That's the point. From the very first scene he is overcompensating.

As soon as he removed the mask, I said wtf is this shite.... immediately lost all credibility. Figured they'd show him listening to Slipknot and drawing on a notepad in the corner of his room at any given moment

He's not supposed to have credibility. That was the point.

One of the biggest problems I had with the new movie aside from being the same damn movie as ANH. It's asinine to think an untrained force sensitive novice and an untrained, non-force sensitive footsoldier can beat a highly trained Jedi turned Sith.

Stupid shite should always be criticized.

- he's not a Jedi, highly trained or otherwise
- he's not a Sith
- he just took a freaking bow caster blast. He was visibly in pain over this wound throughout the fight.

He's not a Sith. He also wasn't a Jedi, only training to be one.

He wasn't highly trained nor was he a Sith. This is emphasized in the film itself.

I thought the movie also makes a point about stormtroopers being trained to use melee weapons that can parry lightsabers so it isn't unfathomable that Finn can engage a lightsaber wielder.
