Had never seen any of either franchise until the last couple of weeks. Watched all three Equalizer movies and loved them. Currently watching the first John Wick and it’s just not doing it for me.

So you haven’t even finished the first movie in the John Wick franchise, but you feel like you can make a declarative statement like this? That’s not a hot take, that’s just kind of

I get what you’re saying. But with the John Wick movies, if the first one isn’t for you they only get more and more ridiculous and over the top and you are gonna hate each one more and more.

I’ve recently watched all four Wicks for the first time, and so far have only seen the first Equalizer. The Wicks weren’t really my jam. I enjoyed them well enough for what they are, but the over the topness was a lot to handle. I won’t say either is better yet, since I still have two more Equalizers to watch, but I can easily see why someone would prefer those to the Wick franchise.

1st Equalizer is awesome. 2nd is kinda disjointed. I've got 25 minutes left in the 3rd but it's better than the last one even if not action packed.

Better plot for sure and of course the lead is a much better actor.

If you want to watch two hours of gunshots to the head. John Wick is your cinema.

I like how The Equalizer has a slow burn and tries to tell a story. But it's really just the first film.

Agree with OP. Other than John Wick 1 the rest of them were comical. Equalizer is much better. Plus the main character actually speaks. John wick 3 and 4 were garbage. Let the downvotes begin.

The first John Wick is amazing, but it was also a meta comedy on these sorts of "invincible man out for revenge". Being over the top, especially ending with him one on one with an old, out of shape final man as the final boss, was great.

Then they got serious, trying to explore the interesting universe/mythology they created in 1, and they got really boring. 2 was OK. I couldn't finish 3. I have heard 4 is really good but I haven't had the heart to try to watch it yet.

Given all that, I still prefer Wick to the Equalizer franchise. It's OK, but has no movie anywhere close to the first John Wick. It's on the level of Liam Neeson old man action movies.

Equalizer 3 was awful. At no point was he threatened. He just kicked everyone’s arse all movie. He was essentially Superman on vacation in Italy.

Do you even know what went into the scenes in John Wick movies?? Keanu literally trained in close quarters shooting and fighting. Those were REAL actions he was performing and real reloads etc. Now, not EVERY shot can be a headshot I agree. But that just adds to how cool the movies are.

The Wick movies, technically, are great. That's why I said they are fine for what they are. The actual movie/plot isn't very good IMO, or is at least overly ridiculous way past the point of absurdity. They aren't for me, but I get why people like them. And the technical aspects of how they filmed it are impressive for sure.

I liken it more to the fact that for me, the Wick movies are just okay movies with some cool in them.

Nah. John Wick character and universe setup is so much more interesting than the Equalizer franchise. Both are good, but Wick was a cultural phenomenon.

The larger John Wick universe with the whole assassin subculture having their own chain of hotels and chain of management elevates this series for me. Its something unique rather than just being set in the real world. Plus the fact that they've used some of the top names in the martial arts genre and gotten them some mainstream exposure is great to see.

I liked the 1st JW but the rest were turrible.

The Equalizer trio is fantastic.
