Just got finished watching The Dark Knight and I got to wondering, did Ledger get the same welcoming as Ben Afflack is as Batman?

Yes, Many were very skeptical of Ledger as the Joker coming in.

Why though, were there better candidates at the time?
Or was he just perceived as a poor choice?

if Ben Affleck dies after Batman v Superman finishes filming, his performance will be considered the best Batman by far and one of the best acting jobs in movie history

Not even close. Ledger would've received praise even if he hadn't died.

I don't think its that simple, but Ledger's death definitely added a lot of hype to the role before it even premiered.

The only thing that would have been different if Ledger would have remained alive, would have been that he would have had to give a speech at the Oscars.

That was a generational performance.

People dismissed him as a former teen romance actor. Then there were those that dismissed him for playing a gay role in Brokeback Mountain.

Then the first images appeared and people freaked out because he didn't look like Nicholson or the Joker from the comics.

Also, TDKR would've been an average movie at worst with him in it instead of the abortion we got

Pretty much a disgrace the Dark Night wasn't even nominated for best picture.

You didn't like it. Fine. You are entitled to your opinion. But to call it an "abortion" is quite a stretch.

I consider Titanic one of the shittiest movies ever made. And Avatar was the second worst movie I've ever seen in theatres next to AI. Although AI is in a category all its own. Would you like to post the stats for Titanic and Avatar as if they would change my opinion?

TDKR sucked a-hole. Had he died at the end of the movie, it might have been able to slightly redeem itself, but Nolan pussied out.

At the very least they should've shown JGL get beaten to death and shot by the first group of thugs he tried to go up against with no training or skills.

There'd be no point. It's very clear to me now that you either love hyperbole or you're just an idiot.

That certainly could've been one way to end the trilogy. Not the one I would've taken, but one...

TDKR wasn't awful, it was just the most like a standard comic book movie. It should've been two movies, but instead held nary a candle to the first two. I would've loved to have seen what happened had Ledger not died.

Rotten Tomatoes is one of the most short-sighted ways to judge the quality of a film. Not to mention the movie got a general pass from the media. It's a bad movie all around.

And Ledger would not have won the Oscar if he had lived. That Oscar wasn't for the Joker, it was about his blatant snub the previous year.
