Hayao Miyazaki, the writer and director behind Oscar-nominated animated films Howl’s Moving Castle and The Wind Rises and the Oscar-winning Spirited Away (oh, and the winner in everyone’s heart, My Neighbor Totoro), had announced in 2013 that he was retiring. “This time is for real,” Miyazaki said. But now, his longtime producer Toshio Suzuki at Studio Ghibli confirmed during a pre-Oscars interview for the studio’s short, The Red Turtle, that Miyazaki is once again working on a feature film. According to Kotaku, “After initially stepping away from directing features, Miyazaki began learning how to animate on a computer and was working on a CG short called Kemushi no Boro.”

“Right now in Tokyo, he’s putting all his effort into making it [the feature],” Suzuki said. Suzuki is producing the film, which the duo plans to have out before the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. No word on whether it will be CG, but we can assume it will be awesome.

I have yet to watch any of his movies.

As the self-proclaimed #2 anime fan on this board, that is a disgrace.

Yeah, that pretty much means you aren't an anime fan.

I don't like anime at all, and I've seen about three of his movies because of my nerd GF.

Save for maybe DBZ, Miyazaki tends to be the source which people introduce others to anime. His works just translate particularly well to American culture and life.

Never watched Anime before just happened to sit down one night with my kids and started watching "Spirited Away". I loved that movie and the story. I was inside that world the whole time I felt like a kid again. Great news on him making another movie.

If you liked Spirited Away, watch his other stuff. Howl's Moving Castle is my favorite.

I had never watched anime up until high school when I saw Princess Mononoke. Because of that movie, I think I've watched every Studio Ghibli film and bought Ni No Kuni for the PS3 the day it came out. I love studying to Joe Hisaishi's music as well. Just a bunch of awesome all around.

I'm going to. Nothing I've seen on his movies have made me want to see them. I know people rave about them, I've seen comments lauding his movie genius on every movie forum I've visited. But every premise from one of his movies I've read, and every clip from his movies I've seen, make them look very uninteresting to me.

It's like people don't know quite how to quantify what's good about them, and only upload clips that make sense to them because they've seen the movies.

I get that it's my fault for not sitting down and trying to figure out what people love about his movies for myself. But I've always had something I would rather watch instead, already queued up and ready to go when I sat down on the couch.
