I believe he's the best actor of his generation. Anytime I see that he will be in a film I will watch it, and he delivers every single time. He consistently puts out great performances, yet has never won an Oscar. It blows my mind.

I watched Dallas Buyers Club, and loved Matthew in it. I'll also say that the run he's on right now is amazing. He has turned into a phenomenal actor. However, Leo in Wolf, as always, great.

When will this guy get his award? Are the performances winning over him truly always just a little better?

Tbh, I enjoy watching Leo, but I don't think he's oscar-worthy. He always does a good enough job, but none of his performance have ever blown me away

I like Leo, but I really disagree. Here's some actors I consider to be better than him in his generation:

Michael Fassbender
Christian Bale
Don Cheatle
Matthew McConghey (sp?)
Russell Crowe
Phillip Seymour Hoffman (bit late)
Benedict Cumberbatch
Joaquin Phoenix
Heath Ledger (Late again)

I agree. I did think his best performance was Blood Diamond.

That would be Tom Hanks

Exactly how I feel. He's consistently solid, but never incredible. He'll get one eventually though.

Add DDL as well. He's the best IMO

I said it in the Oscar thread but I think this is the case. I think he could have won for his performance in The Aviator in a year like when Colin Firth or that guy from The Artist won, but I just can't honestly say he was better than Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, or MM in their respective years.

I'd put Tom in the generation above him honestly. If you want to bring Tom's generation in it, then he's not even close to being in the debate.

As said, I'd say he's the generation above.

EDIT: Took Carrey off the list, since he would be a part of that generation too on second thought.

The real question: Is a lifetime achievement award more or less prestigious than a best actor award?

I think he needs a role where he physically transforms himself. Most of his roles I'm thinking Leo does a great job in this but he's still Leo.

He has been nominated for four(!!!) Oscars before he turns 40. How the hell is that under-appreciated? Just because he hasn't won it yet doesn't mean he's under-appreciated. 99.9% of working actors would kill for that type of appreciation. I don't know the stats but I bet he has some of the most acting noms in history for someone his age.

Matt was just better this year. The other years, I don't know.

Kind of like Tom Cruise is always Tom Cruise. He's damn good at what he does, and what he does is Tom Cruise.

Never makes me forget he's acting. He's Leo playing a role, really well, but not great.

Being the greatest actor is such a subjective thing. It's like being the greatest nfl quarterback. So much depends on the role, and the supporting cast, etc. And there's so many different kinds of acting. Maybe Leo doesn't completely disappear into roles like some actors, but maybe those actors can't carry a movie the way he does. Maybe it's just as hard to bring the level of dynamism and scene stealing that Leo does consistently as it is to inhabit a character once every five years like DDL does.

I think Leo is undoubtedly the best movie star in the world right now. If you combine everything, acting chops, movie quality, charisma, looks, consistency
