You are doing yourself a severe injustice if you have not read the books. I had never seen the movies or read the books, and a girl convinced me to read the books last semester. They were incredible. The books dive so much deeper than the movies. So many more underlying stories. You get a much bigger picture into the world of wizards when you read the books. So many more elements, characters, and everything.

Bottom line: read the books. You won't regret it. I plan on rereading them this summer.

I read all of the books when they came out and now my 8 year old is reading them, she actually started The Deathly Hallows today. It's a great series and for me really grows up in The Goblet of Fire and I think that is my favorite movie adaptation. I think most of the quidich was cut because it never seemed to work as well on film as it does when reading it. Order of the Phoenix is my least favorite book and movie, I guess it felt like such a let down after GoF and is not as good as the Half Blood Prince.

The only book I read was Deathly Hallows. I watched all the movies prior to DH1's release. I didn't want to watch DH 1&2 without reading first. I absolutely loved the book. But It ruined the movie for me.

I think someone from this board once told me to read the books first, then watch the movies, but I just can't do it for the above reason. It seems like every time I've read a book before watching the movie adaptation (not just the HP series), I've been so let down by the movie. I'd rather enjoy the movies on their own, then read and hopefully get a new "Wow" feeling from the books since they seem to have so much more detail.

I just watched Half-Blood Prince & I'm planning to watch both Deathly Hallows this weekend. So far, I've only read the first two books, so my plan is to finish the movie series, then pick up the books again, then re-watch all the movies to see how they really differ.

A lot of people bitched about the final movie, but imo that, particularly when combined with 7 part 1, made for the most incredible part of the entire (movie) series.

As for the books...I really need to reread them. The last time I read one was in '07 when the final book came out, and I haven't read 1-4 since 3rd and 4th grade

Prisoner of Azkaban is the best movie by far, but that's because the director didn't worry about fealty to the text and just made a real good movie in Rowling's world. Most of the other movies just feel like running to hit plot points.

They left out the best part of the PoA! The Marauder's Map.

JK Rowling says it is her least favorite. Found it interesting.

I somewhat agree with her actually, although I would put SS below it. The problem is the book is ridiculously watered down and could have been 300 pages shorter really. Its the only book where I feel has too much fluff in it. Umbridge was a great villain, but I don't think we needed like 3 chapters dedicated to them cleaning the house and other ridiculous filler. The movie pretty much got everything but Snape's Worst Memory and the prophesy, which is a serious flaw, but still I enjoyed the film greatly. One of my favorite moments in the series had to be the Dumbledore vs Voldemort fight: LINK

Especially GoF; so much of the Quidditch World Cup was cut out of the movie!!

That's not even the part they really shite the bed on in that adaptation: they completely destroyed the mystery. In the book you've got like 5 suspects on who is behind everything (aside from Voldemort of course), while the film pretty much tells you from the very start that Barty Crouch Jr. and Moody are somehow behind everything, making it very easy for you to connect the dots. The end when you find out Mad Eye Moody of all people is behind it makes you just about crap yourself. In the book I was positive Bagman was behind everything, and couldn't believe it when it turned out I was wrong.

But It ruined the movie for me. Mainly because it made the movie feel rushed. And of course they kind of fricked up the end from the book so..... Take it for what it's worth. Great series. Loved how it got darker and darker towards the end. I just realized that at the beginning of every movie/book, it's Harry's birthday. Just noticed that watching the movies over the weekend.

If you thought they rushed the Deathly Hallows, then you'll learn to hate the rest of the films if you read the books, especially Goblet of Fire.

Honestly I thought it was the perfect adaptation.... up until the last 15 minutes, and then the film shits the bed. They went typical Hollywood bullshite with the end and had a long duel where Harry throws himself and Voldemort off the top of the castle for literally no reason. Really the finale should have been Harry and Voldemort slowly circling each other as the tension rises, and one curse is cast. It should have been more like this: LINK. Like Clint having the trap set to where Angel Eyes isn't going to win, that's all they needed to do with Harry and Voldemort and raise the tension to fever pitch.

Some of the films have their problems but they're a great accomplishment. The franchise is quality, enjoyable and timeless.

I do wish someone else had taken the reigns after Yates and OoTP.
