EXPECTEDLY/ALLEGEDLY/REPORTEDLY/HOPEFULLY

There aren't enough 's in the world.

quote:

Richard Hammond and James May are expected to turn down a £4 million BBC offer to return to Top Gear and instead launch a new show on Netflix with axed host Jeremy Clarkson.

A source claims that the trio, along with executive producer Andy Wilman are “very close” to signing a big-money deal with the on-demand service and no amount would persuade them to return to the BBC2 show without Clarkson.

Article also says that if they come back to Top Gear, there will be a new guest presenter every week as their third man.

If they don't come back, BBC will move forward and completely revamp the show. I don't think they realize how much they screwed themselves. They shot their cash cow in the head, and still think it's teets are going to produce milk.

I don't think you know how the BBC works.

I think I definitely do. I think my analogy was a bit misleading. I was actually referencing the show itself. Not the network.

Would have been better to say, "They shot their best cash(milk) cow in the head, and yet still expect the same output from the dairy farm."

A. Top Gear is not the BBC's biggest show

B. You definitely don't know how the BBC works

Top Gear is probably the most globally recognized show on the BBC though

In the UK? You are right, albeit barely. However...

Worldwide, it was the most watched weekly series on television.

350 million worldwide viewers in over 212 countries disagree with you. On a WEEKLY basis they averaged basically the same number of viewers as....

The 2015 Super Bowl(the most watched broadcast in US history). IF you multiplied that broadcast by 3.

The 2015 Super Bowl "only" had 114 million viewers.

Yes, they are funded by the taxpayers who are charged a television license fee by the government, and thus do not have a "normal" revenue stream.

If ratings didnt matter, then Top Gear wouldnt have had the second largest budget in all of television at 1.2 billion pounds/yr( LINK). Nor would Clarkson have been the BBC's highest paid on screen talent. Yes, it had a lot to do with the commercial deal he had as co-owner of the show. However, the BBC also made money off of those same commercial deals, roughly a quarter of their income actually. Outside of the UK they are allowed, and do, air commercials like an American network. Go watch BBC-America sometime, commercials everywhere.

Yes it was. Dr. Who is also big, but Top Gear made up more than half of their top 20 most viewed hours of programming.

Why would I do that when I can watch the actual BBC?

I love it.

I post something that should be a joyful moment for all. At the least it should provide decent discussion.

Despite that, you come in acting pissy for some reason, and attempt to insult me. I explain why I said what I did, and that I mis-wrote what I meant. Yet, you proceed to insult me again.

I showed you, in a straightforward manner, the facts of the conversation. I did so without insulting you in the manner you insulted me. I did somewhat insult you, but in a joking manner. Which I felt was appropriate given the circumstances.

Yet, you latch on to a rhetorical statement, and use to it to try and change the subject. You refuse to acknowledge my rebuttal, or that you were wrong. Nor do you attempt to actually engage on the topic at hand.

You are simply hoping everyone will forget the abject failure that was your assertion regarding my lack of knowledge of the BBC, and your casual ignorance of the World's #1 weekly TV series(by viewership).

The casual ignorance you displayed is remarkable. I mistakenly thought you were simply misguided on the Poli Board. It would seem you are obnoxious, and ignorantly opinionated, everywhere you go.

You don't seem to know what this means. The only one insulting anyone in this thread is you.

But it's still wrong.

Because your rebuttal is not worth discussing. A show that the BBC shits out and sticks on BBC-2 is not their biggest show.

Note: The large budget is due to its vastly different production scheme compared to the rest of the BBC's shows (which sometimes take 2+ years off and normally only air about 8 episodes a series).

What about the Stig? I imagine him being unemployed without cars to drive all this time, is a recipe for disaster.

What then is their "biggest" show?

If ratings and budget mean nothing. Maybe you should enlighten us as to what metric we should be using to gauge a show's success. I am curious to know what it is.

Not really. They fired their best milk cow(Clarkson) in that particular factory(Top Gear). Yet they seem to think the show will do just fine without him. They do not seem to realize his personality is what made the show so popular. Both of the characters Hammond and May eventually settled into playing on the show were designed and developed by drawing contrasts from Clarkson. They cannot carry it on their own.

Bolded is the problem in this statement. It wasn't the second highest production budget on the BBC, Top Gear's production budget was #2 overall among ALL worldwide networks. This with far less episodes than the average American TV show, and yet most of the other upper echelon production budgets are American shows. The average Top Gear series only had 8-14 episodes.

Top gear is dead.
Clarkson Hammond and May will come back in an as yet unnamed show.
