Legendary Films has a monster problem on its hands and not the bad kind of problem but a situation where they have two franchises that should be crossing over but not sure if it’s the right thing to do.

Of course we are talking about the financially successful 2014 film, Godzilla and the fan-favorite Pacific Rim.

Both films are about giant monsters, or kaiju if you will, and the rights to both franchises belong to Legendary. However, despite fan outcry it doesn’t seem like the two will crossover anytime soon considering Godzilla 2 is expected to feature Mothra and King Ghidorah.

But in a new interview with Movie Pilot, Pacific Rim 2 director Guillermo del Toro spoke about where he is with the sequel and if he’d like to see the King of the Monsters in his movie.

“So far with the sequel, what we’re writing, what we’re creating, is very different, so there are no plans,” del Toro said. “Hypothetically, I would love the frick out of it. I would love to see a jaeger and Godzilla duke it out. That would be too much for the human brain.”

Now, before fans get too excited. This is not confirmation that Godzilla will make an appearance in Pacific Rim 2. However, with del Toro behind the idea and with Legendary having the rights to both there may be a chance for the Kaiju King to cameo and come in contact with some jaegers.

We will just have to wait and see when the release date for Pacific Rim 2 gets closer. The sequel film is set for a 2017 release.

Edit: Pursuant to my comments yesterday, can he just go ahead and make a Voltron movie already?

Personally I wish Legacy would just give the keys to GDT and let him take over both franchises Whedon and Snyder style. King Kong, too. He would make some kick arse giant monster movies.

Pacific Rim was some of the most fun I've had in a movie theater in a long time. He completely gets what that type of movie is supposed to be about. The robot action was great, the plot served to set up the robot vs monster fights, and you never steered too far away from the fights.

I'd love to see him do Voltron, or one of the anime Robot line. (Gaiking, Grendizer, Getter Robo)

Well where the hell was Godzilla when the kaiju started attacking? He could have saved us a lot of trouble, you know...

but didn't they set Godzilla up as a "good guy" in the first movie? why would the jaegers fight Godzilla? he would be the one fighting the kaiju, no?

maybe Godzilla would fight beside the jaegers?

My guess would be that it would set up like many other crossover movies. They would start out fighting each other then eventually fight alongside each other. In past Godzilla movies, he's been an anti hero at times. I'm sure the government does not fully trust a lizard the size of a skyscraper. They really have no choice but to let him do his thing, unless they had something that could compete with him. Like the Jaegers.

Anyway, I doubt it happens unfortunately. But it is cool that GDT wants it and maybe there is a chance for it.

Have you ever seen a Godzilla movie prior to that one?

Thats pretty much the plot to every Godzilla movie after the original one back in the 50's. Typically it goes like this:
- Some event happens (bomb, aliens land, Mothra Wakes Up)
- Godzilla attacks Tokoyo
- JDSF shoots at Godzilla
- Other "monster" is sent in, turns on Japan
- Godzilla fights other monster
- Godzilla defeats other monster
- Outgoing monologue about Godzilla being "not the monster Japan deserves, but the monster Japan needs."

Pretty much

I can see this where the jaegers are engaged with/fighting one of the big bads and Gojira comes on the scene. Recalling Hong Kong and the breach events where the kaiju teamed upon the jaeger teams, there is a misunderstanding that Gojira is a bad guy (this could be reinforced by an earlier incident involving Tokyo, or another Pacific Rim city) and they start attacking him as well.

right...except none of this happened in the new Godzilla

he never attacked us, he just attacked the kaiju

Do you think they fully trust Godzilla at this point?

Well, considering that Godzilla was set in the Present, and Pacific Rim in the future, it'd be pretty easy to retcon Godzilla as "sleeping" since the events of the movie. Perhaps the closing of the rift awakens him. Then the aliens come back, and Godzilla throws down.

no, of course, and I guess there could be some confusion and they fight or whatever

I think the more likely scenario would be the jaegers are getting their asses kicked and Godzilla comes and saves the day again

Which is probably why this whole thing won't happen. They would have to start Godzilla over. We are probably years away from this thing even being possible, and that's assuming future Pacific Rim movies are successful.

That's also possible, but personally I would love to see Godzilla fight some Jaegers. Much like how I want to see superheros fight each other.

Why? Because they failed to mention the MUTO's and GZ in the 5 second setup during the opening scene in Pacific Rim?

Seriously, if Pacific Rim 2 starts off with them detecting a new Kajiu, and it turns out to be Godzilla, and Always Sunny starts spouting off about "After the MUTO incident in 2014, we thought he was dead!" and then they say literally nothing else about it, would you mind? Would that require any more suspension of disbelief than a bunch of 300ft tallk robots fighting monsters?

Keep It Simple, and get back to to more of this:

I would be fine with it. I'm just curious to see how it would effect future Godzilla movies, considering we're jumping ahead in time quite a bit before the stand alone Godzilla movies finish. I'm not saying it's not possible, but it'll be a challenge.

ETA: Unless they start Godzilla over, which I would be OK with if GDT was at the helm.
