this gets my vote. They also cut some guys from the movie:

Yes, several very well-known actors and stars read for “The Thin Red Line” and/or actively sought parts or had conversations with Terrence Malick, but around only three “major” or well-known stars were cut from the film. They include Mickey Rourke – as seen on the Criterion DVD extras (watch a clip from one of his scenes below), Bill Pullman (see photos in this article) and Lukas Haas (photos exist on the Criterion DVD). According to that very thorough and extensive 1999 EW article, a part was written for Gary Oldman, but then he was told not to show up before shooting began. Billy Bob Thornton (who is not in the film) recorded a voice-over (reportedly three hours of it) for the film that was never used. Actors like Martin Sheen, Jason Patric and Viggo Mortensen are also part of the actors allegedly cut from the film, and while thanked in the credits, Mortensen and Sheen apparently only participated in customary read-throughs (as did many other actors).

The Godfather easily gets it IMHO. To be a great ensemble you can't just have big-name actors. The characters you play also must be fleshed out and the performances have to be solid. The Godfather personifies this better than any other film. The Godfather had three actors (James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Al Pacino) nominated in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Marlon Brando, of course, won the Oscar for Best Lead Actor.

Oceans Eleven and the Departed.
Godfather doesn't count, because a lot of the actors sans Brando weren't big names when it came out.

Ethel Merman's mother-in-law character is Oscar worthy. I bet a few people that saw that movie put off getting married for a long time after seeing her. When her shifty little son joins them it just gets better.

I imagine if you were a comedian in hollywood and didn't get a cameo in MAD MAD MAD MAD, you fired your agent.
Everyone was in the movie. Stooges, Buster Keaton. Every comedian with a pulse was in it.

I put up the cast list, nothing tops that list

I once put up a list of all of the Academy Awards and Emmy Awards and nominations by the cast to prove how insane that cast is to the younguns.

Dirty Dozen
Greatest Story Ever Told *(yeah, the movie wasn't that good but still a good cast. Great lesson in how to misuse one)
Spartacus (Oliver, Douglas, Ustinov, Gavin, Simmons, Tony Curtis)
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
From Here to Eternity (Clift, Sinatra, Lancaster, Borgnine, Warden, whoever that guy that played SHeriff Lobo was, Donna Reed, Irene Dunn)
I'll skip the Godfather movies. Too obvious. And I also don't think movies like Cannonball run should qualify as they were just movies used to throw in every star they could find.
*John Wayne, Sidney Poitier, Charleton Heston, Jose Ferrer, Max Von Sydow, Shelly Winters, Telly Savalas, Roddy McDowell, Caroll Baker, Angela Landsbury, Claude Rains, Martin Landau, Van Heflin, and even Pat Friggin Boone
How many Oscar winners are on that list? I count at least 5

It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Stanley Kramer was turning away comedians who were begging to be in that one.

The Godfather 1 or 2. It's not close to me: Brando, Pacino, Caan, Shire, Cazale, It's ridiculous.
