After pondering, is it just me or were the 80's the golden age of awesome TV show theme songs? Sorry young peeps.

Charlie's Angels - LINK
Doctor Who - so otherworldly. LINK
Hill Street Blues - LINK
Dynasty - LINK

Bonus: Wow, found 10 hours of Doctor Who theme songs. 10 hours. WTF. That's a lot of weed burning. LINK

Serious, do I have memory block or are all the great ones from the 80s?

Pretty sure Leonard Cohen wrote it but is that him singing?

Dukes of Hazzard was a classic. The Wire was great as well, all five versions.

Nice.

Sopranos isn't great musically but as far as somehow, almost inexplicably, capturing the heart of the show it's great.

Anyone know if James Gandolfini sang backup on it? Sounds silly but when I watch it with headphones on laptop and swear I can hear his voice in it.

It's performed by a band called Alabama 3 and the songwriting is credited to 2 members of the band.

Ironically, it was inspired by a case in which a woman got fed up with abuse and killed her husband. (Gun fitting the song, musically, better than knife, apparently.)

ETA: I particularly like Sanford and Son, Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, Magnum P.I., the A-Team and M*A*S*H (the original theme from the first season - the streamlined, more mellow version closer to the film, rather than the jazzy, more upbeat one).

If I add in Greatest American Hero, it should be noted that Mike Post wrote or co-wrote the themes for Rockford Files, Hill Street Blues, Magnum P.I., Greatest American Hero and The A-Team - which makes him responsible for my entire list, except for Sanford and Son (Quincy Jones) - and then 14-year old Mike Altman (lyrics to Johnny Mandel's music) for M*A*S*H (who made about $1 million for writing the theme song for the film - directed by his father, Roger Altman, for $70,000).

I love this theme, but you probably picked my least favorite version of it.

I prefer Hartnell's or Smith's. Each for different reasons. Hartnell's for its simplicity, which I think makes it that much eerier and more spacey; Smith's for its energy and excitement it conveys.

The Firefly theme was also perfect for the show. It set the mood of the show so well.

Justified

80's did have some great ones - Hill Street Blues, Dynasty, Dallas, Cheers, Benson, Jefferson's, LA Law, etc.

It also had some really cheesy ones - ALF, Charles In Charge, Kate & Allie, etc.
