1. Probably to buy time.
2. Gendry was the fastest and they had to bring the wight which slows them down exponentially.

Also, why didn't the Night King just kill Drogon? Or just throw spears at the stranded group?

great episode for sure. action packed.
i agree with the poster that talked about the time jump and kinda just bouncing around. It feels like they are just trying to fit everything in and we are missing out on a lot of develoment?
i dnk i loved the episode I just want Martin to fricking finish the next book already.
Also I thought for sure at least one more of those guys would die, and to freeze to death was a shitty way to go out for a legend.

yeah, they weren't getting it back to the wall. they didn't make it clear why they sent the raven...I assumed they wanted dragons to come bail them out, but then why didn't they just ask before they went beyond the wall

Beric and Thoros were perfectly cast imho. Fantastic episode, undead bear attack would really suck. As some have said, even knowing what was coming didn't help seeing V get got by the NK. Can't wait to see him ride the Ice Dragon.

They didn't intend on going against the Night King and the entire army. They wanted to just grab one wight and get the frick out of there which would have worked had it not screamed and call attention to the situation while they were tying it up.
They asked Gendry to send the raven because it was literally their only hope of making it out alive and Jon even says Daenerys is their only way out.

i'm biased because it has action behind the wall which is red meat for me, dragons, a huge plot development, night king
and i knew everything that would happen ahead of time. had i not, it would've been 5/5 boners...i think.
