Bump for the premiere tonight. Reminder: Do not post any book info beyond the point the show is at.

Okay, 2 questions. I think I asked one of them before. If Sam is such a coward, why did he become a warrior Crow? Why not an engineer or cook?
Also, I watched season 1 again yesterday. Vyseris (sp?) says they had been with the guy who arranged the Drogo marriage for "over a year." Where were they before they got there?

you talking about why he took the black or his role there? Sam is a steward and in charge of the ravens not sure where you see him as a warrior.

Braavos with a targ supporter who snuck them out of draggonstone. After he died, they then wandered which is why he was know as the Beggar King making his way to Pentos

Here goes. Hope I am following the middle ground rules properly here:
Pretty sure he's a steward in the Night's Watch.
I think they were pretty much wandering around in Essos begging for shelter and aid from whoever would assist them. Danny seems to remember a house with a red (I think that's the color) door fondly from her childhood but its never been explained what if any significance that has.

Sam is a steward and his job was to take care of the ravens. They needed someone to relay messages back to the wall while they were out in the field so they brought sam.
As far as vyseris and dany they were living with magister illyrio (sp) across the narrow sea.

The Middle Ground brand name is well recognized now. I've see many people suggesting middle ground threads for other shows.
I agree. Neutral Ground is cool and all but I think Middle Ground is more descriptive in this context. And its definitely more well known on this site.

John was technically a steward too out there. His job was to help out commander mormont. I'm not completely sure on this but I don't think people really have a choice on what they want to be. The higher ups decide what role they would suit the best. Sams dad was going to kill sam on a hunt if Sam didn't take the black because he couldn't stand that his son was a fat coward.

. I think " GOT Neutral Ground Thread" is more appropriate for a Louisiana based GOT thread though.

Yeah. Randyll Tarly is kind of like the Bull Meechum of Westeros. A great military man. But as a father, not so much.

i'm curious how a guy like sam even grew up to be that way. seems like his father would have taken care of his issues at an early age
was he away fighting wars or something?

here is what I found on game of thrones wiki
quote:didn't link the page because it has spoilers on it
Samwell Tarly is the oldest son and former heir of Lord Randyll Tarly, the head of House Tarly and Lord of Horn Hill. He is popularly called "Sam", and disparagingly as "Ser Piggy." He is gentle, bookish and shy. He is a large boy who, though having grown up in a comfortable setting, was consistently abused by his father, his instructors and his peers.
House Tarly is one of the most powerful noble families in the Reach, and sworn to House Tyrell. By rights, Samwell would have grown up to be one of the top ranking lords of the Seven Kingdoms. However, his father Randyll Tarly is one of the most skilled military commanders in Westeros, and hoped for a son who would carry on his leadership of House Tarly in battle, not an overweight scholarly-minded son like Sam who has no thirst for violence. His father, ashamed of him, forced Samwell to take the black under threat of death in order to disinherit him. Had Sam refused to join the Night's Watch, his father bluntly told him that he would arrange a "hunting trip" with his son in the woods, and then kill Sam in such a way that it looked like an accident. Sam departed for the Wall, leaving his younger brother as heir to House Tarly.[1]
