Standard season is 10 episodes, season 7 and 8 are 13 combined episodes. Why not just make season 7 the final season w 3 additional episodes?

Because it would have skipped this year. All this cgi stuff takes time and money. Fewer eps per season means more money can be concentrated on these awsome battle scenes.

Well if they get 100 million a year budget, would you rather they split it up over 13 episodes or would you rather they split 100 million over 7 and then another 100 million over the next 6? Which do you think would provide the better quality? They could have just started working on the spinoffs sooner if that was the actual issue.
