The Alienist by Caleb Carr.... It's also going to be a big budget miniseries on tnt next year by the guy that directed most of true detective season 1.

Synopsis- The year is 1896, the place, New York City. On a cold March night New York Times reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned to the East River by his friend and former Harvard classmate Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a psychologist, or "alienist." On the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge, they view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy, a prostitute from one of Manhattan's infamous brothels.

Thanks for the recommendations everybody.

I've checked The First Man in Rome and Pillars of the Earth out from the local library and giving the first chapter of each a try to see which to go with first (looking like First Man so far).

Definitely have to print out the thread to give me some future reading material as I've only read a few of the things on it before - War and Peace and I Claudius and one or two others.

Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall and Bring up the Bodies are great, especially if you like Tudor history.

I'd also recommend The Grapes of Wrath. The structure of the novel is genius, and it is very powerful. Steinbeck does not mince words, and even today the relevance of the novel is undeniable. At times it's like a punch in the face.

The Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian. Great stuff.

December 6 - Martin Cruz Smith; was very enjoyable. It felt like Casablanca set in Japan just before Pearl Harbor.

If you're interested in Vlad Tepes, check out Vlad Dragwlya: Son of the Dragon. Written by an LSU employee if I recall correctly.

He's a friend of mine. I wholeheartedly support this endorsement. Support your local novelists!

The Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough is really good

Agree. And the parallels with American politics in 2016 are frightening.
