There, I said it. I can watch GoNY every time it’s on. Nothing against “The Departed”, great movie.

No. Not at all.

Gangs of New York is a fun movie and I like it, but its bloated, with some really poor performances.

The Departed is pretty much a masterpiece imo

Gangs has the benefit of DDL but not even the greatest actor of our time can lift it over The Departed’s perfection.

Cameron Diaz alone knocks Gangs down a notch

I will watch Gangs of New York if it’s already on, as in I don’t need to watch it from the start. I wouldn’t just pick up and watch the departed from the middle of the movie like that.

But, the Departed is definitely a better movie.

Infernal Affairs > The Departed.

It’s the original (Hong Kong), and it’s way more fun than The Departed. Nicholson’s accent is terrible especially if you’ve ever lived in New England. Scorsese has directed tons of better movies, I’m not sure this is even Top 5 if his catalog.

If you’ve never seen Infernal Affairs, and you’re okay w/ subtitles, I can’t recommend it enough.

An automatic no for me. I'm sure I'm missing out on some great film, but when the mouth doesn't match the sounds, I'm too distracted by that and can't focus on the substance.

I love them both but if I have to choose one, it's easily the Departed

The shame of the academy (when it still
mattered) is they often failed to give the award to someone when they deserved it and wind up pity giving it to someone late in their career.

Totally get it, and why I mentioned. It may be dubbed in to English. I don’t know.

100%. The Departed winning for best director is just a “lifetime achievement award” for Scorsese.

I quickly wiki’ed The Departed just now. I can’t believe it was released 17 years ago. Seems like yesterday.

So which of the other four nominees should've beaten him that year?

Alejandro González Iñárritu – Babel
Clint Eastwood – Letters from Iwo Jima
Stephen Frears – The Queen
Paul Greengrass – United 93

That and some of his performances seem strange or out of place.
