Friday Night Lights question (limited spoilers)

I'm just starting S3E1, so please don't give any spoilers beyond the first 2 seasons…
So I just watched the last episode of Season 2, and it was business as usual - Smash was suspended for the final 3 games and they are making push for the playoffs. They are still basically chronicling each individual game per episode, and won what I think was the second of those last 3 games. Then it jumps to S3E1, which begins with a press conference, during which they rehash last season via flashbacks - playoff run came to an end when Smash got injured, etc.
This was such an abrupt transition that I went back to the season guide on Netflix to see if I accidentally skipped some episodes. Just seemed weird that they'd end season 2 seemingly in the middle. For those who watched while it aired originally, what's up with this? Likewise, Season 1 was 22 episodes while the remaining seasons appear to be 13-15 episodes. Writers strike? Plane crash full of writers? Just seemed out of character for the series that S2 transitioned to S3 in such a manner.

Season 2 was writers strike
ETA: also, after the first few seasons it was cancelled on NBC and moved to something like The 101 Network. So that is probably why there were fewer episodes going forward per season

Much like the Star Wars prequels, fans of the series like to pretend that Season 2 didn't exist. The show writers pretty much do as well. Storylines from Season 2 are dropped and not ever referenced again. Most people who watched it will advise someone just starting the series on Netflix to skip the 2nd season entirely and just go directly to the 3rd.

Season 2 is noticeably different and it was due entirely to the writers strike.

Tyra and Landry: Best story line ever.

spinoff: WTF happen to JD? He was taking Matt's job then just disappears?

Like other said it's because of the Writer's strike. That's also why that season sucked overall.
There are a lot of the story lines from S2 that are completely abandoned in S3. Like the mexican kid living with Buddy and Lyla's Church boyfriend. Neither are ever mentioned again.

Weird progression of events dealing with JD McCoy. His character sucks.
