Disney has just released a first look at the cast of Star Wars: Rogue One, Gareth Edwards‘ upcoming spinoff film about a group of resistance fighters who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star, and there’s quite a bit to break down.

Not quite as forceful, and for shorthand, we’ll still refer to this as “Star Wars: Rogue One” or just “Rogue One” since Rogue One: A Star Wars Story sounds like a bedtime book.

Moving on, we also have some new and exciting additions to the cast. We previously reported that the cast included Felicity Jones, Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, and Forest Whitaker. Disney has now announced that the cast will also include Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Let the Bullets Fly), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), and Alan Tudyk (Firefly), who will be playing a performance-capture character.

From a talent and racial diversity perspective, this cast is fantastic, and I can’t wait to see what they do together. But if it has a major problem, it’s the same one that The Force Awakens had when it announced its cast: painfully short on female roles. Granted, based on this image and the order of announcing the cast, it sounds like Jones’ character is the lead of this ensemble, but that’s still just one female role and it’s 2015. That’s ridiculous. Hopefully there will be some more additions similar to how Lupita Nyong’o and Gwendoline Christie were announced after the big cast photo was revealed for Force Awakens.

Update:

quote:

The Daily Mail is reporting that Peter Cushing, who played Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars, will be digitally resurrected for the upcoming spinoff, Rogue One. For those that don’t know, the plot of Rogue One is about a group of resistance fighters who unite to steal the plans for the Death Star.

It makes sense for Tarkin to be a key character since he’s instrumental in the building of the Death Star, and a source tells the Mail, “This is one of the most complex and costly CGI re-creations ever. Cushing is a pivotal plot line as he was the one to create Darth Vader and there’s a whole back story that will come out.” If this is true, that means Darth Vader is probably coming back, but it’s a whole lot easier to put him into the new movies than it is for Cushing, who died of prostate cancer in 1994.

I don't give a frick about racial diversity. That has nothing to do with whether the movie is good or not.

It doesn't matter to you. It matters to stock holders.

WTF? You think stockholders give a flying frick about diversity? I am a stockholder of Disney. It does not matter one bit to stockholders. Only one number matters - net profit. It could be nothing but chimps playing those roles and I would be very happy as a stockholder as long as the net profit was high enough.

They will make more with a diversified cast that caters to international markets.

Wrong again. The data does not bear that out. International box office is driven by many different things. China is becoming a big market and I can assure you they don't care about diversity. Transformers 4 made over $1B, driven by foreign markets, because it was a big spectacle. There was no diversity in that film.

Take a quick look at the Top 10 highest grossing movies of all-time and you will see very little diversity there.

Meh. I am not excited for any of these anthologies films especially the Han Solo one. The only way I will enjoy Rogue One is if Vader is a main character. They also need to have a scene in the Senate w Palpatine and Jimmy Smits. Maybe even the characters from Star Wars Rebels in live action form. The Yoda film could be decent only if they use it to show the history of the Jedi order and span the film over his 900 years.

But we all know that Emperor Palpatine WANTED Rouge Squadron to find the plans in the first place, that he even engineered the entire thing...

So what's the point of this movie again?

I'm with you on that one. He should be left alone, theres plenty of other stories they can tell.

Have they said anything about a Yoda film?

I don't like the picture. It looks stuffy and while it looks Starbwars, it doesn't feel Star Wars. Everyone but Jones looks like a damn hobo as well and I'm sure we will get a bunch of eccentricities that no one gives a shite about. But I've liked all the other stuff I've seen so it gets a pass.

Also, odd article you linked.

This is the story of the squadron who stole the plans for the FIRST Death Star. Not the second one.

Yep. The rebellion was too small when the first Death Star was destroyed for the empire to be worried about the rebellion. Palpatine dissolved the senate in anticipation of the Death Star and with the confidence that it would make up for the lack of control the senate provided. Once the Death Star was destroyed, that needed power was gone and people flocked to the rebellion in huge numbers. It was at that point that Palpatine started planning the endor ambush.

It has drivin me absolutely nuts when I hear people talk about "we will finally see all those bothans dying" in conjunction with this movie.
