I have the movie "Serenity" on DVD and have seen it many times. Did not realize until the other day that it was from a tv series in 2002 called "Firefly". I have watched the first 9 episodes on Netflix the past two days. Most sci-fi tv shows are really cheesy or poorly produced but this show is one of the best I have ever seen. Why in the heck did it only last for one season? Does anyone know? Would love to see those guys make another movie at least.

This question is up there with the meaning of life, and if a tree falls in a forest. When this finally gets answered then we may know world peace.

Also, what was Fox thinking airing the episodes out of order?

It's a fantastic show. Just lots of fun from start to finish.

Out of Gas is one of the best episodes of anything that I've ever seen. It was so damn good.

I like this show. But it is difficult to spread positive word of mouth. I tried to tell a few people about this show on Netflix about space cowboys and they were not willing to give it a shot.

Yeah, which is ultimately why it failed I think...kinda hard to sell a "space western" to mainstream America. I feel like it could've maybe blossomed somewhere like the CW/WB, or even something like TNT (it's easily better than Falling Skies, which TNT has given five seasons).

And like you said, it's not even an easy sell to your friends. "Space western" sounds sort of dumb, even though that's exactly what it is, and it does it so well. I usually just tell people it's a really fun, solid show and is an easy watch since it's just 14 episodes and a movie.

If Whedon made Firefly now, it would be a hit show IMO. At the time he was know for Buffy and Angel.

Spielberg is involved in Falling Skies IIRC

Oh I agree completely. Well, if it was on a network other than the four bigs, that is.

He executive produces it IIRC. But taht doesn't really matter...the show is pretty terrible. I have, however, seen every episode and will finish it out next season.

Correct. But that's not a good way to explain Firefly to someone to get them to watch. It isn't "like Star Wars" IMO.

absolutely. not even fox could frick it up.
When Firefly had its initial "run" geek culture wasnt "cool" like it is now. If it was put on today, more people would give it a chance and all it really takes is 20 minutes before you are hooked by good acting and even better dialogue.

As for those who cant get their friends to give a "space western" a shot... just tell them that the guy who made The Avengers has a star wars type show with Castle as Han Solo and Steve the Pirate as the pilot. Oh and there is a super hot prostitute as well.
That should do it.

Who, IIRC, has gotten naked before in a movie.

I've been looking for a series to watch on Netflix since they pulled Battlestar Galactica. I'll have to give Firefly a try.
