Does anyone have an idea why the always are cursing in japanese? It just doesn't make since to me.
There is this whole wild west theme then they start speaking japanese... I'm confused.

They are speaking Chinese. English and chinese are the most spoken languages in the world right now. The writer of firefly, josh whedon, believes that in the future these two languages will be the only two spoken. So everyone knows both languages.

Not Japanese, it's Chinese.. and did you completely miss or just ignore the whole "origin" story!?!?!
When the human civilization began their journey to the new planets, the only "large" countries in existent anymore were the Chinese and the US.. therefore, everyone grew up knowing both, so they curse in Chinese.

and I'm pretty sure they mention why they talk in Chinese in the first episode as well.
As an aside: How can you not tell that this was Chinese instead of Japanese?! Japanese is far from that brash..

Remember that this is an LSU message board and there are tons of people that have never visited anywhere outside of the Southern US unless it was an Americanized tour of a Caribbean island while they were on a cruise.

You don't have to be a pretentious dickhead just bc he can't tell Chinese from Japanese. If he's never studied one of the languages or been to either country, how should he be able to?

I like to think I would know the difference between Chinese and Japanese but who knows. Either way, I would never call someone out for not knowing the two

I'm not, I'm stating a fact. I know many people that never have left the south and everything foreign sounds like jibberish to them. I really wasn't trying to paint the OP as an unsophisticated lifetime redneck, I was trying to point out to BA that his expectations were a bit unrealistic. Not everyone gets to travel and not everyone wants to. There's nothing wrong with that.

Common sense. Show takes place in future. Only two languages are spoken. How many people speak japanese vs Hanyu?
