Suicide Squad’s marketing wasn’t about justifying a political agenda. It was about entertaining an audience. There was a time, not that long ago, where movie studios made movies to entertain an audience. Apparently it is still a thing. You just have to look carefully.

Suicide Squad is garbage.
I'm sure Batman, Joker, and being a part of a bigger comic book universe had more to do with it than anything else.

Having Batman and Joker as characters in the movie can't hurt either, even if they were only short appearances. But I do agree that this was also a factor.

Yeah the article loses its argument when the fact is exposed that this was advertised as a movie that included the Joker, Batman, and a bunch of male villains with Harvey Quinn being the hot piece of arse to look at.
Then it turns out it stars a bunch of females and its reviews are absolutely horrible.
Not because of its female cast but because the movie was a flop as a whole.
But still, the author is absolutely right in pointing out that Ghostbusters was doomed from the start. People wanted to hate that movie. People wanted to love Suicide Squad and could have if it was a better film.

It's a shite article, but the point isn't about Suicide Squad being a great movie or being garbage (it's neither). The author thinks that Ghostbusters was marketed as a SJW statement (which it wasn't). It was the remarks and reactions from Fieg and the actors after the fan backlash that were SJWish.
The marketing for SS (AS A WHOLE) was much, much better than Ghostbusters. It didn't have to do with shots of Joker or Batman, it had to do with the trailers and commercial spots being creative and drawing the viewers in. People watched the SS trailers and thought the movie looked fun. People watched the Ghostbusters trailers and saw that the jokes were hit and miss (at best).

Make a movie that can open in China. Also, don't spend $150 million on a comedy (which doesn't export that well). Honestly, the lesson is about BUDGETS. If Ghostbusters cost a reasonable amount of money ($50-75 mil), it's a hit. The problem was the cost. And the fact they made a big budget movie they can't show in China.
Hell, the massive turd that was Warcraft made most of its budget back by going to China.

Ghostbusters made about 180 million (worldwide) in 4 weeks.
Suicide Squad made about 326 million (worldwide) in 5 days.
Were they both shitty movies, yea pretty much. Did the critics constantly tell everyone how great and wonderful Ghostbusters was? Yes. Did the critics tell everyone how horrible Suicide Squad was. For the most part, Yes. Yet SS far outpaced GB at the box office.
And as for China, neither movie was shown in this country. GB was shown in Mexico, SS was not.

I finally decided to see GB yesterday and I didn't think it was that bad. I didn't expect the original movie.
I also didn't care about the political statement. I just went to be amused for 2 hrs and I got that.
What do people really hate about it so much?

This silly argument has been played out for years.
I'm willing to bet the house people have spent more time complaining about that movie than the actual running time of the film.
People choose to go out of their way to be heated up about social justice Warrior bullshite. None of it is "crammed down your throat".
And the critics were on the ball with this one. Ghostbusters was okay, Suicide Squad was crap.
