I would say "The Stand", but since it would take Peter Jackson and $350 million to do it right, I'll go with "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card. I read it and still can't believe it hasn't been tried.

It has.
Wolfgang Peterson was going to direct it, and OSC actually completed a script after the studio threw out the first draft.
It died in development hell though.
Not sure that series would translate well to film anyway. It focuses too much on monologues.

FWIW:
quote:
Following the departure of Petersen from the project and Card's self-described refusal to "condescend to green-screen Hollywood," Card announced in February 2009 that he had completed a script for Odd Lot Entertainment, and that they had begun assembling a production team.

Hmmm. I still wouldn't mind if they could find young actors to deliver the dialogue well. The battle school games would look great with today's tech.
well done Mr. Card, don't take any guff from those money grubbing asses. You wrote it, you should make sure it's done well.

Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy. It would have to be a series like Band of Brothers.

That's pretty funny. As soon as I read the subject to the thread, I thought of Ender's Game.

House Of Leaves. There is no way that could ever translate into a good movie

Snow Crash, although that book would probably be impossible to put on film

The entire Dark Tower series by Stephen King. There was talk of JJ Abrams doing something with it but I haven't heard anything recently.

not sure if they have been a major movie or not, but i've never heard of them: "alas, babylon" and "last of the breed"

The Partner and The Testament by John Grisham, of course I believe they have butchered some of his others and they would both be 5 hour movies to get it right but I would be ok with that if they could do it right.

The Day Before Midnight Really any of the Stephen Hunter books would be good. They have only done Shooter (Point of Impact) and although the movie was good, they should have stuck to the book.

I always thought "enders game" is where they got some of the ideas for "Starship troopers"
