Can someone explain this movie to me. I watched it when it first came out some 15 years ago. I watched it again this past week and I think I understand it less.

Secret sex parties.
What are you missing?

Kubrick is Illuminati. They killed him for making this movie and cluing the public in on their elite lifestyle.

It is a weird film for sure. One of Kubrick's weirdest -- and that is certainly saying a lot.
Basically a married couple is bored with one another and frustrated (as many are).
Wife assumes husband is cheating or at least entertained by the notion. Husband is aloof, inattentive and career oriented.
Wife reveals she once fantasized about an affair. This troubles and casts doubts about his trust for her - something many married couples fear. The decay of trust for your spouse.
The husband has a bruised ego and decides to go out and explore the sexual underworld. Hookers, sex parties, debauchery, etc. Things he avoided while living a safe, vanilla existence.
After a series of near-misses and mis-adventures, he realizes that though flawed, his relationship with his wife can be salvaged with attention and effort.
I think it's about marriage and trust and attention to our partners wants and needs and how jealousy, narcissism and ego are poisonous to a relationship.

I have always enjoyed the film. I think there is a lot more about the film than meets the eye.

Is it because it is wide shut?

Of course
Does anyone else get the feeling that Nicole Kidman was also at the party and knew all along he was at the sex party? We know that the girl that helped him out at the party was the girl that ended up dead but I always got the feeling the wife was somehow in on everything as well or did she just discover the mask and put 2 and 2 together? I haven't seen it in a while so I may be missing minor details.

i've only seen it once but i "read" it as a SUPER dark comedy, best summed up here:
it's also a really great visual movie to sit back and watch. lots of great lighting, custumes, angles, and pretty naked ladies
now the sexual themes would take more viewings to really sink in. the ending kind of made me think that their sex bullshite was just them being dramatic
the guy who does the symbolic/occult interpretations has an amazing interpretation of the movie, though
quote:
Dr. Bill Harford: Was it the second password? Is that what gave me away?
Victor Ziegler: Yes, finally. But not because you didn't know it. It was because there was no second password. Of course it didn't help too much that those people showed up in limos... and you showed up in a taxi. Or that when they took your coat, they found the receipt to the costume from the rental house in your pocket made out to you-know-who.

Is this right? I thought he kind of staggered out in a daze and then sort of happened onto the sexual underworld.

quote:Wait, she discovered the mask? I always interpreted that the sex party people snuck into Bill's apartment while he was meeting with Victor and left that mask next to the wife as a demonstration of their power and as a final threat to Bill to back off and stop asking questions.
did she just discover the mask and put 2 and 2 together?
Were we supposed to believe that she got the mask and put it there? Or that she was aware it was there before Bill walked in? Because I didn't see it that way.

Probably scientology related with Cruise starring

Wasn't she awake when he entered the room and pretended to be asleep. I always felt that meant something.

He couldn't find the mask when he returned the rest of the costume. My guess is that she found it and laid it on the pillow to ask him about it when he got home.

Hmm. I never thought of it that way. I figured he left the mask (or it was taken from him) at the party after he was unmasked. Did we ever seen the mask in his possession after that point?

I always thought the sex part people found it and put it on his pillow.

This didn't even cross my mind - but now that you mention it, I think this is likely.
