Do you find that when your expectation of a movie is very high, the movie is often a let-down? And conversely when your expectation is low or nil,you get surprised a lot?

This happens to me a lot.

I can even think of some movies where I had high expectations, didn't like it that much, then saw it much later and suddenly liked it a lot.

i rarely see movies that i have low expectations of unless they're a comedy, so that half of it is out (for me)

I don't really like to hear other people's opinions on movies before I see them because I don't want it to influence what I think of the movie. I like to go into a movie knowing as little about the film as possible.

That's why I ALWAYS give a movie a second chance. Always. Especially for art films where you can't soak it all in the first go around.

There was this huge build up, then the air came leaking out of it.

The first hour or so of it was awesome.

Expectations play a big part. I tend to enjoy even shitty movies if I have really low expectations.

Like Transformers 2. Shitty movie but I enjoyed it because I expected a really, really, really shitty movie.

And it was tough for Dark Knight to stand up to all my expectations.

Great example of the opposite for me...I didn't see it for quite a while after it came out and all the talk had died down. I was definitely blown away watching it without as high of expectations.

I agree...I try to go in as even keel as I can for every movie I see. I almost never read reviews before I watch a movie. If I do read a positive review, I always read a negative one to balance it out. I also never watch anything "behind the scenesish."

I've found that the older I get, the harder I am to impress.

That's why I loved this movie so much. It was everything I hoped it would be.

The last movie for me that lived up to the hype was Saving Private Ryan. I was into it from start to finish.

there were some other things about it that annoyed me with BR.

the pace/story was jumbled. they tried to put too much in this movie

the style was off to me. too many close shots and "hectic" fight scenes

it was not the "perfect crime movie" like it was billed to be

We have all become a society that wants instant gratification on a GRAND scale.

We have forgotten to simply be entertained. I am as guilty of that as anyone.

Just visit the rant to see tons of idiots that have forgotten to simply enjoy a victory. Now it has to be a flawless thrashing or the coaches need to be replaced each week.

Same thing happens with movie and tv. Unless we are blown away, we are disappointed.

Not pointing fingers. I am guilty of this all the time. That is why I tend to enjoy movies I knew nothing about more than mainstream hits.

The last time I was truly wowed was the full Lord of the Rings series, but that was because I read the books once a year growing up so I was just thrilled they were finally being made into movies.

Movies like Avatar have almost no chance with me simply because of the MASSIVE overhype machine builds the expectations too high. It can still happen from time to time, but most of the time they fail to meet the overhype.

I try to ignore reviews and opinions when I'm watching a movie, but sometimes I do go into a movie saying "ok, lets see if it's as great as people say it is".

That, Pulp Fiction and Scream, all from that era.
