Everest (2015) was a great movie (SPOILERS)

NON-SPOILERS......
Finally got around to watching it and I highly recommend it. Scenery was beautiful and it has a superb cast with great acting. For those of you not familiar with it, it is the retold tragic story of the 1996 disaster on Everest that killed 8 climbers. One of the survivors, Jon Krakauer, wrote the book "Into thin air" shortly afterwards, but I'm not sure if the movie was based off of just his account.
SPOILERS..............
For being a great movie, it was also very sad and heartbreaking, especially seeing how some of these people had zero chance of surviving. Jason Clarke's portrayal of Rob Hall was amazing and he was certainly one of the best to ever climb, but man it was sad watching him slowly die while talking with his wife. He did everything he could for his clients but that storm was just too much. Now these dead bodies are basically trail markers en route to the summit. Then to make things worst, some of the survivors such as Brolin's character had all his fingers and nose amputated from frostbite! Screw that shite man.

I haven't seen it yet, so if there are spoilers in your post should you put that in your thread title?

Good, yes. Definitely.
Entertaining, yes. Totally.
Great, that one is more debatable.

I believe it was a great portrayal of such a horrible event and it really showed how helpless people are in that type of environment.

quote:I don't disagree with that. It was intense in that way, and highly entertaining. But for me, a movie's greatness needs a certain artsy, atmospheric treatment - like Casablanca, or The Godfather, or Schundler's List. And characters who are very memorable and quotable. Not sure Everest meets my litmus test. But if it does for you and others, them maybe I'm just missing something and need to watch again. I did like it.

I thought it was a rather bad movie. Maybe bad is too strong but it wasn't good and it most certainly was not great. I felt there was very little character development. I can't go into too much more without spoilers but I felt like they just threw in a bunch of accomplished actors and filmed the movie as quickly as possible.

The book is fantastic. They did not base the movie on the book, and Krakauer has gone on record to say they did not consult him about it at all. I thought the movie was entertaining, and a good cautionary tale. Rob Hall and Scott Fischer were two men in the middle of an arms race to see who could be the number one guide service on the mountain. They let their hubris and competitiveness get in the way of their judgement and they paid the ultimate price for it. People involved also say that Krakauer being there writing the article for Outside Magazine also had an impact on Hall's decision making. Regardless, the book is fascinating and I'd highly recommend it if you enjoyed the movie.

It came down to the fricking ropes not being ready. That slowed them down almost two hours. After that, they were doomed. Even if it weren't crowded that day, many of the first-time summiteers would have perished.

So many little things snowballed that day into disaster.

Went straight to redbox and got it
Just finished it
Now I can discuss it
I enjoyed it, tragic end that you knew was coming the whole time, but really enjoyed it

This. I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it had some issues. Well worth the watch.
