Went to see Edward Scissorhands at the cinema for nostalgia...movie really holds up, still a great critique on suburbia and Winona on the big screen back in the day...looks great.
Anyways...despite saying I wasn't going to watch it...I walked into Dumb To...after Scissorhands just to check it out...but ended up staying for the entire movie.
I think people are over-romanticizing the first movie...this sequel isn't too far off from the 90's version (and I had just re-watched the original a week ago) - in fact, some of the flashbacks, dream sequences, fighting scenes are almost the exact same humor if not better than the original.
Having recently re-watched the original - I didn't see that much difference except for - its not new again, and you can't go home again and that's a prejudice that is hard to get by.
If the original movie didn't have a legacy...and this movie was the original...I thought it stood on its own pretty well with the same humor and would have gotten better reviews. I think the negative reviews are rosy-nostalgia and Star Wars effect. Inflating the past.

quote:Ruined The Hobbit for me. I watched the first two again recently and they're actually not bad. I will give D and D Too a shot.
Star Wars effect

Watched it earlier. I'm not disappointed because I was expecting garbage. It wasn't garbage. It was funny at times, but not funny enough for me to recommend in itself. The driving force in the movie for me was the blast from the past I got. It was nice to get back into that wacky world of Harry and Lloyd, even if it wasn't executed on as high of a level that we're use to seeing from these guys.
Anyway, I recommend it to the die hard d and d fans. I think they should at least enjoy certain aspects of the Lloyd and Harry interaction.
Spoilers.........
The cat on meth in the background swinging from the chandelier was the funniest part in the movie, IMO. It's the subtle things that I find funny.

I couldn't stop laughing when he pulled his finger out of the Mack truck's fender.

I liked it when Harry was on the stage at the convention ragging on these brilliant ideas. "But it cures cancer!"

quote:I thought that whole concept was pretty funny. The part that I think the movie failed at was trying to recreate some of the jokes from the first one.
