Not familiar with the comics...would it be better to brush up on the characters and some story arcs before viewing?

Mad Max: Fury Road wasn't a bad move. It was hurt by the casting of Charlize Theron though.

What killed Mad Max for me was that I saw it after the hype and that everyone was like it's so great to finally have a simple action movie that is balls to the wall

I left thinking that John Wick and Dredd did same thing but better.

Urban was superb as Dredd, not absurd like Stallone.

I agree. Though I think Mad Max was more a visual treat and that's why it was garnering all sorts of acclaim. That and the female protagonists.

Olivia

I thought Fury Road was good... then I tried to rewatch it. It was pretty bad; bad acting from all of the ancillary characters; extra stupid plot; it just didn't hold up upon rewatch.

Dredd however, I can rewatch multiple times. It holds up quite well, and I think it will continue to do so. Once the "fan boy" shine rubs off of Fury Road, it won't be highly viewed, but Dredd's numbers will keep up over time.

It is a real shame it didn't get enough play to continue the movie series. I think a lot of that has to do with advertising. It seemed that the studio was happy just to make its money back and close the book on it. (Fury Road was crammed down your threat every time you turned on the TV - therein lies the difference.)

The only thing I felt was really missing was him saying "double whammy" to his lawgiver. I don't know about the original comics, but I found the Stallone version entertaining enough that it sticks with me as good entertainment and I was hoping for that little nod to the older movie, however cheesy it might've been. (Of course I wouldn't have complained if Olivia Thrillby had gone topless. )

Best thing about Dredd was the chance to see Olivia Thirlby go blonde:

Dredd was great, I still think The Accountant surpasses it in the "Action" genre...maybe John Wick,too... I need to watch it again. My favorite Karl Urban character was Jason Bourne's ubiquitous rival assassin in "...Supremacy". Thirlby in "Goliath" shows she has some big league acting skills to be reckoned with alongside of Billy Bob Thornton and William Hurt.

So were those quick nekkid shots of her character really Olivia? If so, she got some big arse knockers.
