I believe the black stuff was tar maybe oil.

It could have been access to the sewer system in the run down part of Detroit he lived in.

I believe it was heating oil. They use that in older Yankee houses in lieu of natural gas or electric furnaces/heat pumps.

I watched it last night. Really fun horror movie. Some great looking shots. It was probably story-boarded well. This director (Fede Alvarez) looks promising. I really liked his Evil Dead movie as well. I looked at it more as a separate, stand alone movie and not a remake. Considering the success of Don't Breathe both critically and financially, we can probably expect him to be on the rise. I look forward to his next one.

ETA: This movie cost 10 million and made 140 million. Damn. That's a ridiculous return.
