Late to the thread but yeah I agree with you. I hate that Holmes is a popcorn flick. Why not make it a thriller/suspense movie? You have plenty to work with to do that or make up your own story.

Yeah Holmes did some bare knuckle brawling in the books but they weren't action books. I took the movies for what they are though, a popcorn flick, and the first one was decent based on that criteria. I'll go see the second one because I love the character though just like the first, it won't remind me of anything I've read in all the books other than they use the same names.

Agreed that the BBC series is waaaaay better. The Jeremy Brett 80's series is fun to watch too.

I loved the first movie and will love the second since it is reviewing better than the first.

Holmes "purists" are nancy ****s.

It's not really that:

Holmes has become hyper-polarized. in both the BBC version and the new one, while his powers of deduction are even further off the charts than before, so are his social issues. That's the weird part.

Forgot about him bending the fire poker back in to shape. I love the Case of the Speckled Band.

Edit: I do like that Watson isn't a snooze fest. Jude Law is a pretty dang underrated actor.

The books are old as balls, they wouldn't relate well on screen IMO. The first one was very entertaining and had a good plot throughout. I'll watch the second one

Holmes was said to be exceedingly strong to the point of almost superhuman abilities in the stories. He could bend steel bars with his bare hands, and often engaged in physical violence during the course of his adventures. Admittedly, most of this occurred off-stage, and we only heard about it as he related his adventures to Watson.

I don't remember the bending bars thing, but I do know that Sherlock wasn't a giant nan-nan. Nor was Watson, just like you said.

So, does it bother me that the new Sherlock Holmes is a bad arse? No. That he knows martial arts? No. Particularly because of the way he breaks down a person's anatomy and sees the way a fight will go down prior to the actual fight. I think that's awesome and is a characteristic that Holmes would have as someone with such deductive reasoning.
Is it over the top? Of course. It's a Guy Ritchie movie. But don't you ever speak ill of RDJ, BayouBlitz, you no-talent arse clown. That man is brilliant.

I think I'd enjoy it more had Richie directed it 10 years ago. Who ever said popcorn flick is right. I want to see him use cocaine and opiates, make it dark. Hollywood marginalizes film to PG-13 shite, to sell tickets and it sucks.

I find it kinda insulting that Jude Law is Watson. I don't think Watson is supposed to be remotely good looking and I've always imagined him to be fat and slightly balding.
