Hulk Hogan's court case against Gawker Media sheds light on wealthy, powerful figures who challenge freedom of the press in order to silence critics.

This just dropped on Netflix. Anyone seen it yet?

From the looks of it, seems to be taking the side of media and how rich, powerful people are going after them to "suppress free speech."

I can't feel bad for Gawker. Releasing someone's sex tape is hardly a case for being called media. But I am interested in watching this.

ETA- Netflix reviews crush this for it's one-sidedness.

That synopsis is pretty messed up.

I started it, it was pretty good from what I saw. The Gauker guy is a total douche and Hogan makes some of the most outlandish claims I've ever heard. I will be finishing it later

There is a good story to be told RE: how much yellow press should a society embrace when it comes at the price of individual privacy. I think famous people should be possible to scrutinize (that much is in the public interest) but the argument that the public interest extends all the way into sex tapes ought to make us at least uncomfortable.

this sounds like a huge, unimaginably biased, piece of shite

Yes it does. But still interested in watching it. It'll be interesting if this is "their piece" to fight back on all the "fake news" claims being thrown at them this year.

That Gawker guy has always come across as a douche. Hulk Hogan has been exposed to be an egotistical a-hole who is anything but his 80's "say your prayers, take your vitamins" persona. But exposing someone's sex tape is not media.

It's undoubtedly biased, but how Hogan navigates the proceedings is definitely worth watching

That's one of the things I want to see. The Hulkster is a master manipulator. There's a reason he stayed on top of the wrestling business for almost 30 years.

Free speech has limits. Into your bedroom with another consenting adult is one such limit.

I finished it last night.
I enjoyed it.
Very biased, and I agree with the outcome.
That period in his life was bad for the Hulk (divorce, kids going crazy, buddy betrays you).
FBI tape was pretty incriminating (lost his Hall of Fame status due to his racist rant).
Still not sure why the guy from Paypal got involved. Know he is a libertarian and it may have been from a philisophical standpoint, or he may have just hated Gawker.

Peter Thiel was outed as gay by Gawkwer... he had a huge grudge to settle with them.

Gotcha.
I blame our society.
If we wouldn't consume the trash the media displays, we would get better media.

I think the underlying precedence is the more important thing to take from it. The fear here is that another celebrity will be able to censor the media on the basis that the person and the "persona" are two different people.

frick Gawker though, they had absolutely no integrity

I'll watch this tomorrow or Sunday. Just viewing the trailer made my blood boil. I love how they just lumped Thiel in with Trump and such, completely glossing over the fact Gawker outed him.

Watched it last weekend. Total joke. Media crying about their rights. Had zero to do with Trump, really. Hogan got help from a billionaire who and since Trump says mean things they lumped him in.

Wife left the room with 15 minutes left to go because it got so absurd.

Fun watch but totally ridiculous.

Hogan talking about his junk in court was the best scene though!
