American Pie was more my time than Superbad and I would still rather watch Superbad

AP captured HS more realistically than any other movie ive seen for the most part (not including Dazed and Confused because it was a different era) and had better character development and plot. I love superbad though dont get me wrong

I don't think American Pie spoke for my high school at all. I don't remember high schoolers looking like they were 25, recording my sexual adventure in front of an entire school, fricking an apple pie, losing my V-card on the exact same night as all of my friends, and I don't remember hanging out with a 2 dimensionally sophisticate caricature. And lets not even mention the ridiculous shite in the sequels (particularly the blow job at a five star restaurant). We all had the fake ID tale and buying beer underage, showing up at a shady party where you know absolutely no one and is actually pretty hostile, run in with the cops, and failed drunken sex. Sure there's some outrageous gags and situations in it, but its a hell of a lot more realistic version of high school than American Pie had.

It's not that it necessarily 'changed' comedy, but it was pretty much the first big R rated teen comedy since Porky's. It definitely pushed the boundaries enough for Superbad to be possible (not saying Superbad couldn't have been made without AP, but they definitely paved the way).

The 40 Year Old Virgin is the comedy that paved the way really, not American Pie. Sure it came before it, but it would be a good five years before any change became apparent.

Was 40 YO Virgin a teen comedy?

On a semi-related note, how many R rated comedies were produced in the 3 years leading up to AP and the 3 years after?

Fact

American pie had some iconic moments- milf, flute pussy, but those scenes don't make it a great movie at all. The only reason i even cared about it that nuch was bc of the tits. Superbad is better.

Unlike Superbad. American Pie has longevity and rewatchability. Saw American Reunion lady night. Loved it. These characters are a path of my generation. Can't say the same about Superbad.

I honestly feel the exact opposite of what you said.

I watched American Pie recently for the first time and could barely get through it.

I can honestly say that I genuinely dislike the movie; it just doesn't do it for me on any level.

Superbad, however, had me in tears on first viewing and the re-watch quality is pretty great, too.

Spot on. I didn't buy a single thing American Pie was trying to pull off. It all felt so transparent.

I never liked American Pie, other than Shannon Elizabeth's parts. I thought Superbad was funny.

American Pie had much more of a cultural influence than Superbad.

So many common references came from that movie. Superbad had Mclovin.

Well, the R-Rated Comedy had been going pretty strong before the release of Superbad, to where its not surprising that it didn't have as big of an impact as American Pie did.

Didn't feel the need to. If you don't agree you are either too young or oblivious.

If this is the way people your age think then AmPie is your generation's Breakfast Club. Less than Zero was their American Reunion.

Even if a kid ended up being one of the American Pie types, hopefully they weren't always that way. Everybody goes through uncertainty and doubt as a teenager. It's part of growing up. Everybody doesn't have a really good friend. Especially some of the AmPie types.

Superbad is better in every aspect IMO. Funnier, better story, better character development, more realistic plot one could relate too.

I like American Pie, but it just does not match up to Superbad. I feel that Superbad gets downgraded in the minds of people though when you compare it to the other Apatow works, but it might be my favorite.
