Hunger games movies are supposedly a lot better than the books.

There are some books where it’s impossible to make a movie that’s better. The Exorcist is an example, the book really goes down the rabbit hole and not fully translatable to the screen.

Ender's Game
To be fair, Ender's Game was never going to work as a movie; at least not an epic blockbuster.
If you wanted to stay true, you can't show any space battles, no CGI at all. It would have been watching Ender play Stellaris or some space version of Total War all movie, as he bonds with his classmates. And then when he passes the "test" at the end, you break the news.

Do that, and people will feel cheated that there was no action to watch, and say "well that was just a fricked up premise".

I do think you can make a great movie out of a so-so book, but it's nearly impossible to make a great book into a BETTER movie. The LOTR trilogy was great, the books were better.

Easily. But just making a good movie in general seems to be a challenge these days, whether the source material is a book or not.

Jurassic Park

I enjoyed the movie more than the book but I always figured it’s bc I saw the movie before reading the book.

I agree. The movies are great. To be fair I listened to the audiobook bc I rarely have time to sit around reading anymore. But it was hard to stay engaged even though the narrator was fine.

And before y’all give me shite, I read the Hobbit and Silmarillion.

No. Far more detail in a book and there's probably only a handful of movies that truly stuck to the book to begin with.

I agree. It probably would have worked as a series though.

And you can can easily show all the battles. The set up would basically be exactly like esports are now.

The Shawshank Redemption as a movie was better.

Figured that would show up here. No.

I love the movie. The book is still better, and I've read it at least 8 times because it is that good. The book isn't all that long. It was written as a screen play by Cormack McCarthy, and took a while for the Coen's to get to it. Almost every word in the movie is from the book. But the book has two important parts that had to be left out. The first is the hitchhiker - the other woman found at the motel with Llewelyn. Great dialogue in the book, it had to be left out for brevity I guess, OK, but this is why books are better. Second, Sheriff Bell's WWII backstory. That was important for understanding the ending and should not have been left out, period. So no, NCFOM book is better than the movie; and the movie is great.

In addition to some of the ones already mentioned, I'd say Starship Troopers, Jurassic Park, Hugo, the 40s version of Fountainhead.

I know you didn't put a Michael Crichton book on your list...right?

This is they way I feel about the book Wiseguy and the movie Goodfellas. I initially thought Goodfellas was one of the best movies ever made but its best lines are drawn verbatim from the book. They are too different to compare though.

Yeah, I'm not going to feel crazy thinking an era-defining film is better than the good Crichton book it's based on.

Maybe I don't hold Crichton in as high an esteem as others. Eaters of the Dead is a fascinating idea for a book, but I don't think it's very good. Its film adaptation, The 13th Warrior, is also better than the book.

You have my sword.

I started reading Fellowship after watching both it and the Two Towers movies, and only got halfway through Book 1 (so, a quarter of the way through Fellowship). I stopped because I realized that the amount I had read that could probably fill a whole movie, and we hadn’t gotten to hiding from the ringwraiths. Beyond what was shown in the film, nothing was going to matter in the long run, so why was I still reading.

I'd add Dr. Sleep. The theatrical ending was WAY better than the novel.
