Do you prefer Godfather 1 or 2?

Both are one of the greatest of all time, but I think I prefer 2 over 1.

The storyline with De Niro as Vito rising to power is pure cinema magic.

Which one do you prefer?

Why?

I'd rather watch 1, but I think 2 is slightly superior

I used to like 2 more. I now prefer the Brando stuff over the flashbacks to Sicily.

Too close to call. 1 has a lot of great moments. 2 had Deniro in Italian. 1 looks more like a final, finished product. For whatever reason - whether it was the casting problems, Brando's no show, etc., there is something about 2 that is just "not quite right" despite it's legitimate status as greatest sequel of all time.

I'm liking the Saga/Complete Epic versions - if you have the time - but that's like all day, like a full shift at work.

I watched it over the weekend.

Pretty cool.

Love both but would choose 1 over 2. To watch Michael become a part of the "family" is the best to me. When he is at the hospital and prevents the hit on Vito and he says at his bed side "I with you now pop", gets me every time.

I prefer 1 mostly because of Marlon Brando

1 is the better overall movie to me but the my favorite scenes are definitely Vito coming to power in 2.

Can't choose. When I watch The Godfather I typically watch both in a row like 1 big movie. I don't do very often at all, but it's typically an all day event.

After re-watching both it was clear to me that The Godfather is the better film, but both are top five all time.

they're both excellent, but the original is without a doubt the better film.

2. I just love the parallel structure. Also, it makes Fredo the doomed tragic hero of the saga, and I am such a sucker for that storyline.

Brando is my favorite actor and De Niro is my second fave so it's very tough for me to pick one. They are both method actors from the Actor's Studio and learned the Stanislovsky Method from Stella Adler and Brando was kind of passing the torch to De Niro in part 2.

Some modern actors who come from the Method are Leo, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Johnny Depp (Brando also passed the torch to him on the set of Don Juan Demarco.)

I don't know, I guess I pick one because I love Sonny a lot too.
