The hardcore bookreaders are a small, small piece of the moviegoing pie. Some of you are overvaluing this part of the fanbase greatly.

This is not to say some of the books aren't worthy of being a movie. I'm just saying, its very unlikely those fans opinions hold any weight with the producers.

This!

Back in the 90's when WB was trying to get some Superman projects off the ground, they brought in a superfan (no pun intended) to write them the first in a long series of movies for them. They said they loved his script but didn't think it would bring in the extra income they wanted. He basically said that the studios don't care about the comic fans or the $150 million box office (this was the early 90's mind you) as much as they care about kids/tweens the $500m they can make from merchandising.

Disney didn't just purchase Star Wars for the film rights. Hell the box office take from Episodes 7-9 will only be a tiny fraction of the revenue they'll generate from buying up LucasFilms. The first Cars movie did about $460m at the worldwide box office. It brought in over $5 billion worth of revenue.

I love it, finally they can hire someone that has a better grasp of storytelling.

Saying that the bookreaders are a small piece of the star wars community is completely incorrect. Again why would you go completely against what has been cannon in the star wars universe for years, and piss off a lot of your fans. They aren't "hardcore" book readers, I know a lot of average people (even people who aren't really fans) who have read some of the books. I just think it's foolish to risk alienating a lot of your viewer base right off the bat.

So, Leia is now officially a Disney Princess?

There is almost no chance this will be based on existed novel or Lucas property

Disney CEO Bob Iger said Lucasfilm had already developed an extensive story line on the next trilogy, and Episode 7 was now in early-stage development.

Looks like it will be almost entirely based on Lucas' previous ideas.

I did not read the entire thread, but has anyone discussed how the opening credits will be altered? Is there a way that Disney and 20th C. Fox can work out a deal? I don't want to see any Disney crap before the Lucasfilm logo. I want to hear the 20th C. Fox lead-in!!!!!

Gore Verbinski or Rob Marshall? Verbinski wouldn't be a bad idea considering his work for Disney on PITC1-3 and his upcoming work with The Lone Ranger, but he has BioShock and a Clue movie (supposedly not a remake) on his slate. Plus, I don't think Johnny Depp can play a Jedi

As for the guy who is way all about the books or whatever, let it go. That core audience will see it no matter what. Do you think Disney was focused on the comic book readers when they produced The Avengers and marketed it or do you think they considered all demographics and audiences? If you make the movie for just the hardcore fans, you may break even. If you make it so that everyone can relate, that's when you make your money.

I can't wait to see how this translates to video game IPs. Good news all around.

The Books were never considered official cannon I don't think. They are EU.

But guess who doesn't give two fricks about that? Filmmakers.

They will make what they want, and Disney will make a bunch of money on all the new novels that comes out after that.

Well, let me get my Sniper Rifle out. Got to kill a few executives.

I mean seriously, couldn't they just remake the prequels instead? Like what the frick are they doing. I have never been more pissed off by film news like this in fricking years. God damnit.

IIRC, video games = canon; books = not canon

Pixar buying the property has potential. Would love to see Brad Bird take a swing at Star Wars

That is true, but I don't want "Episode 7". Luke, Han, and Leia should have basically nothing to do with it as far as I'm concerned. If they go like a century forward, I'll be ok, and if Pixar is behind it, then I'll definitely be better, but I'm still distraught by this whole damn thing.

I wouldn't mind JJ Abrams getting his hands on them, but then again he's pretty much made a Star Wars film with Star Trek.

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass `Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."

My initial reaction may have been premature, but honestly this is what Lucas should have done from the very start. The potential for the franchise was unbelievable, but he made sure no other director got their hands on the franchise after Kershner made almost indesputably the greatest film in the franchise and one of the greatest sequels (if not the greatest sequel) ever made. I'm actually proud of George, even if he's getting a boatload of cash for it.
