Belloni explained that this message from the Disney exec responded to a recent article he published which covered "whether the politicization of the Disney brand impacts box office
quote:

This was met with a relatively harsh response from the executive, targeting politicized audience members who "equate the perceived messaging in a film as a quality issue:"

"Everyone says 'It’s the movies, stupid,' which is an easy thing for people to say. More appealing movies are a great way to jump the political issues. But more and more, our audience (or the segment of the audience that has been politicized) equate the perceived messaging in a film as a quality issue
quote:

They won’t say they find female empowerment distasteful in The Marvels or Star Wars [the latest trilogy starring Daisy Ridley], but they will say they don’t like those movies because they are ‘bad.’ "
quote:

So ‘make better movies’ becomes code for ‘make movies that conform to regressive gender stereotypes or put men front and center in the narrative.’ Which is what you’re seeing now, and what Bob [Iger]’s pivot is about right now."

Disney took a multi-billion dollar enterprise such as Star Wars and turned it into something utterly toxic within a decade.

That's amazing.

This is someone within the company lashing out because Disney is going away from the bullshite. It's right there in the parts you quoted.

They really are the kings of doubling down. Can the shareholders not hold these morons responsible?

Their initial plan(which was actually good) was to release a movie every year. A “main storyline” every two years with movies like Rogue One and Solo in between. They could have KILLED it with the right direction. Instead we got the sequel trilogy and guess what? No movies in like 7 years.

The best part?

Its pretty simple really. Know your fricking audience. How hard is it to make princess stories for the girls and make super hero movies for the boys? Stop trying to force a narrative in a story where there doesn't need to be one.

Tell a good story about good vs evil without all the "masculinity is bad" messaging and you'll have a hit on your hands.

This is like drawing a bad picture of a woman with the words “Heil Hitler” scribbled across it, then calling people who don’t like it bigots because a woman is depicted in the picture.

Remove the “message” and it’s still a bad picture that no one wants to look at regardless of who is in it.

So they're learned nothing (or at least are pretending to).

Good luck with that strategy.

Since Star Wars is basically dead in the water, what does she actually do on a daily basis?

This Exec doesn't have enough hair on their arse to divulge who they are.

While true, Disney is still dumb for ever having executives with the mindset of the nameless crybaby. The fact that it took torpedoing multiple billion dollar IPs for change to be considered is also dumb.

I think this lack of awareness is way more damning than anything else.

They refuse to acknowledge that the movies they are putting out are bad and deflecting.

Lazy Hollywood writers will continue to pitch half-arse movies that feature DEI standards because they know it will get picked up.

I'm honestly shocked that all the poor box office returns haven't made them change strategies even if they don't come out and say it.

i read on the deep Reddit that apparently the board loves Kennedy despite Iger wanting her out.

He's just a puppet.

The sequel trilogy didn't flop because of Daisy Ridley, imo. It flopped because of a terrible story and no continuity.

Female empowerment was never the issue. We've all enjoyed movies with strong female leads - T2, Alien/Aliens, etc. I mean hell - The Wizard of Oz is about a female lead battling a female villain with male secondary characters and everyone was okay with it.

Good writing, good directing, and characters you WANT to see succeed are what matter.

If your only thoughts regarding strong women are:

1. Deconstructing existing male characters, AND/OR
2. Mistake-free, never challenged girlbosses?

Then don't complain when literally NO ONE can relate to your protagonist.

We didn't all like Luke Skywalker because he eventually becomes powerful - we liked him because he was overcoming his own limitations and growing and learning. Just like normal people do.

It's not a code. It's simply make better content.
No one is bitching about the Ahsoka TV series centered around a woman.
Obi-Wan was just as shitty as the sequel trilogy, and you had two of the most famous characters of all time in that show, and they blew it.

THe issue isn't the actors gender. It's selecting writers and directors that have no clue what the source material is, no clue what their main audience wants to see, nor do they have respect for the source material, regardless of their genital preference.

No one complained about Rogue One being based around Jyn Erso. Its funny when they weave some of these themes into the story and dont make it the story its a much better movie.
