IIRC there is a comment made about National (later Reagan) being iced in and that Dulles was getting there planes too as a result.

Reagan airport runways are not long enough for larger planes however Baltimore and Andrews air base aren't that far away.

I remember watching this with a pilot friend, and he was losing his mind. The first time they would not get a response from DC the planes would've diverted. At 1/4 tank, the planes are considered out of fuel and will land anywhere . The pilot has the authority to ignore commands from the tower if they are in danger of running out of fuel.

Why didn't someone from the tower just go down to the terminal and call the FAA from a payphone? "Hey... terrorists have taken control of our tower communications. Spread the word!"
