Something I just thought of, reading this thread: Why did the Jedi not know that Palpatine was force sensitive? Qui Gon had just explained the midichlorian shite to Anakin, saying Anakin would have been tested as a baby if he didn't live on such a crappy planet. Was Naboo as backwater as Tatooine?

The prequels made me question a lot about the jedi.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this. Absolute Power corrupts absolutely. The jedi to an extent had that, it became corrupt, they were infiltrated and exterminated. And they didn't even know it until it happened.

Good point, Lucas created a massive plot hole. Naboo wasn't in the Core, but it definitely seemed like it was civilized and developed enough to run the test (if Qui Gon can run that test while working out of a broken down ship, you have to assume hospitals in such a civilization would easily be able to). It seems like a basic blood test, you get the results back in hours.

Hmm- MAYBE, they did run it, and learned Palpatine WAS a good candidate. And maybe the decision to give your child to the Jedi is optional, not mandatory... and his family didn't want to give him up. Or alternatively, his family was wealthy enough to bribe the right people, and keep their kid.

And Palpatine one day discovers this and becomes angry/resentful- kinda like one day you find some early testing results, and discover they knew in kindergarten you have an IQ of 200, but your parents didn't want you to get into a gifted program or anything like that. And now you're sweeping floors in a shop after drudging through high school, where you're a nerd, instead of being on scholarship to elite boarding schools, etc.
So he went emo and goth (or Sith, as it were), and wrought your revenge on the entire system. Took out the high school bullies, terrorized and eventually ended his parents, then turned his wrath on the Jedi next.
