Did S5 of Game of Thrones show a quality drop? (might contain book discussion)

I think it did show somewhat of a decline compared to previous seasons.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think this season sucked or anything like that. But I did find it took a step back from it's best work.

First of all, I am not one who takes issues with hardly any changes from the books. I think for the most part they were well thought out and necessary and sometimes even improved the narrative. I'm sure there are exceptions and I'll discuss them if they come up but none jump out at me right now.

Most of the problems I had are minor things like small inconsistencies in character motivation and arcs like Thorne and Stannis. While most of their characterizations were fine I thought there were some kind of jerky, stop and go moments of flopping back and forth

I did think that the Dorne one story-line was subpar in a number of things: from fight choreography to dialogue even to costuming. If not for some Sand Snake boob, that whole storyline would have been almost useless.

Overall as a season yeah it was probably the worst but I still found it entertaining. My buddy who read the books warned me that it wouldn't be as crazy as season 4 and there would be more political battles than actual battles. With that said, Hardhome might have been one of the best episodes to date and I would say the best battle they have ever filmed.

Dorne was pretty disappointing but the fallout from the poisoning could have huge implications on the story. So while it dragged a little it might be a little too early to call it useless

The source materials (books 4 and 5) had a big drop in quality too.

It got criticism from a lot of book readers, some (but not all) of which was unfair. It also upset people for political reasons (by that I mean when something bad happened to a woman). I will say the Dorne story line just did not work for several reasons. That being said, it's still a critically acclaimed show with an enormous fan base and finished the season on an extremely strong note. Hardhome was one of my favorite hours of television ever.

For a series maintaining numerous characters and subplots, it spends way too much critical time on conversation or situations of little importance or lagging profession. Series 5 seemed to drag, and the story progress came in spurts. The show also seems to be a bit too reliant on shock value to make up for dullness.

So you think the dialogue is boring but don't like whenever there's action either?

I just don't think you like the show son

He should probably stop watching TV and get back to work.

Dorne was horrible. Could have been awesome. But it did produce one awesome plot point at the end - Myrcella's death.

Otherwise this season was pretty good. Hardhome hit a grand slam to carry the victory.

look no further than Dorne

it was a mess, a waste of the shows time, and provided the shittiest and most illogical scene of the entire show's run

about the only thing Dorne did was tell us how poison works

I enjoyed this season, but the Dorne story line was an absolute dud. I would have much preferred Bron and Jamie in the Riverlands and doing the original Dorne plot line where they try to "crown" Myrcella. It seemed like what the show did was not well thought out, hurried, and didn't really produce any scenes that were any good (outside the prison titty scene, of course) until the final episode when Jamie finally gets the father/daughter moment he always wanted only for Myrcella to die in his arms.

The Dorne storyline was pretty bad. At least in the books it involved more political intrigue.

But I did love the Meereen storyline in the last half of the season, once Tyrion arrived. It made me actually care about it, but then again Tyrion has that effect. But the Tyrion/Dany exchanges were pretty awesome, and almost lived up to the hype I've had in my head ever since Tyrion made it to Essos in the books. Now I wonder how long Dany will stay away from Meereen. I'm guess at least for half of season 6.

This. Meereen was masterfully done (although Sir Oldie McOlderson dying in such a lame fashion kinda irked me. I would have preferred he died in the pit if they were going to have that happen).

I also absolutely loved Hardhomme. That storyline was masterfully handled in the show. I did miss the whole Manderly "The North Remembers" stuff, but I understood why they cut it. Shereen being burned alive was one of the most brutal things I'd ever seen on television.

The season was fine.

It's kind of suffering from the "it's cool to pick apart the popular show" way of thinking.

The dorne thing wasn't great but overall this season progressed on many major plots

GRRM has too many storylines in his book. I think the show has done well stream lining this issue. As I have said before, there is only so many times you can show Arya selling oysters at the dock. And did they really need an entire season to basically build her up to kill one person on her list?

i'd go along with this.

the first four episodes were solid. this season's weakest part was the middle epi's 5-7 and i thought 8-10 were pretty damn great.

Yeah, people are up in arms about sansa being raped but they're ok with a field of troop bodies after the battle winter fell. It's like SJWs outrage when they talk rape on TV, but look the other way when 100 US troops die oversea. F*ck those hypocrites. If their action are not consistent why should we give a shite about how they feel?
