yes I know there is a whole thread devoted to it but basically everyone in it is gushing over how great it was. Is that really all it takes anymore to impress us? I was disappointed (especially that it took 2 1/2 hours to get through it).

I enjoyed it very much. I can see why some people didn't like it, though. Care to list your reasons?

However, I will agree with you about people over-gushing about it. Calling it "the best movie ever!!" might be going a little too far. The same thing happened when Avatar, Toy Story 3(to an extent), and The Dark Knight came out.

Just out of curiosity, could you list a few recently released films that have impressed you?

I just watched Ropers review on it. He gave it an A+ and said that it will be the best movie of the 21st Century.
I will admit upfront that I don't like Science Fiction.
I just thought it was the same sci-fi hokey stuff where basically you can make up anything as you go because nothing really has to make sense.
And as for the great special effects; I thought it was pretty standard for what movies offer with today's technology.

No movies have impressed me to the level that this movie has apparently reached with everyone. That's not to say that I haven't enjoyed any recent movies. I just don't think this one did anything to set it so far above others. Plenty of movies make you think and have special effects.

Good post.

Basically, the director decides "I'll make a multi-layered movie. Each layer will have different rules. These rules will allow some people to mentally masturbate and proclaim my movie as great. I'll throw in a few action scenes and they'll say it's even better. On top of it all, I'll throw out a few general philosophical and psychological ideas and they'll call it genius!"

While I enjoyed it; I certainly hope this isn't the best movie of the 21st century. And you seem to not just be trolling, so I am genuinely curious as to what recent movie you think is on par with this one. I just don't think this movie has any real glaring deficiencies. Certainly not the best ever at anything; but I would rate the acting, story, score, effects, intensity, etc. all as good or better.

I haven't seen it yet but IMO the foreign film industry has exceeded the american/hollywood industry in the past 2 years. I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison but IMO it's the truth.

Recently, I would say that Inglorius Basterds and Shutter Island (even with the similarities) kept my interest better than Inception did.

Did anyone else have no feeling whatsoever for any of the characters? The movie was entirely action and idea driven. The character development was pretty uninteresting. I felt no sympathy, anger, happiness, nothing for any of the characters.

For those who loved it, tell me about your feelings towards the characters, because like Leo said, emotion is superior to reason in our mind. That, by the way, is a Kierkegaardian response to Hegel.

I quit caring very early in the movie as to whether the characters were dreaming or not dreaming. I really just wanted it all to end much earlier than the 2 1/2 hour mark.

It's a very good movie. I liked it a lot. Not going to dub it an all-time great because to do so at this point would diminish both Inception and the greats. I wasn't surprised at its quality because Nolan's got an impressive repertoire. This most certainly was not an average film steeped in hype and masked with special effects and "make-you-think" tactics.

Again, and this is just my opinion, it is a very good movie. Much better than most of the crap the studios spit out on a regular basis. Great? We'll have to see how it stands up to repeat viewings, later audiences, etc. I would definitely not jump to calling this the greatest film of 21st century.

Well, it wasn't about the special effects (like, say, Avatar). The special effects were used to accommodate the possibilities of the dream world.

Obviously this movie isn't for everyone. Is Inception a character piece? I would say no. Is it effective in delivering the concepts that it is trying to portray? I would say yes. I think that Nolan certainly could have spent more time on character backgrounds and adding even more complexity to the story, but at what point do you have to start cutting back on those concepts to make the movie cohesive and interesting to a majority? Some people don't like Inception because they want to go against the grain. Some didn't think it was complex enough. Some didn't like it because the concepts and how they were portrayed were over their heads. It depends on each viewer and what types of film they like and how they invest themselves emotionally in the plot and characters. Everyone is different. As I write this, Inception has a rating of 84 on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 9.3 out of 10 on IMDB. Obviously we will have to wait a few weeks to see how those scores average out. But after sifting through reviews from both professional critics as well as the general public, the consensus is that this is film that has peoples attention. It has made an immediate impression on most who have seen it.

I thought it was borderline terrible. Not sure how anyone liked it at all.
