Dexter: How horrible was Det. Doakes's life in Miami?

Started rewatching and I just finished season 1. This show really was incredible for four seasons.
On to Doakes. Paying attention on this rewatch, I was rooting for Doakes to catch Dexter. And it sucks the way his story line ends:
High school athlete
College athlete
Army trained
Special Forces/ Green Beret with known successful deep cover ops in South America
Undercover officer
The best homicide detective in the city
Maybe the best instincts of any cop in America
By all accounts he was living a pretty good life until he retired from Special forces operations and became a cop in Miami.
He was passed on a promotion because his partner, a shitty annoying Cuban lady cop, happened to be the one to actually handcuff the very high profile perp he had tracked, located and cornered.
Alienated multiple times by his peers because of the way he treats Dexter.
Multiple unsolved cases because Dexter kills the perps.
Then finally he gets killed by Dexter and his legacy and life memory ruined as he is framed for everything Dexter did.

Well, he was an a-hole.
But he did get screwed over.
Especially since everyone thinks he's the Bay Harbor Butcher.

He was a dick and deserved what he got.
And you are going to love that show

He was a dick but he was the only one who saw through Dexter's shite.
He got screwed. Also, wasn't it ultimately the crazy English chick who killed Doakes? It's been a while since I saw that season.

I recently started Dexter and now I am on S3E3.

I loved Doakes. They should have kept him alive and put him in the Laguerta role. Minus the falling in love shite of course.

He was too smart to play that role

Insane that dumb Laguerta was put in charge of that division.

Doakes was my favorite character of that first season. I was bummed out when he was killed.

I never watched the last season because I heard how awful it was. However, it is BS that Dexter never paid for killing Doakes. It should have been his downfall.

Nope. Lila killed Doakes.
But, yeah, Doakes got fricked big time.

quote:Correct. I wish they would have kept Lila around. Not a "every season" character, but just show up every once in a while and frick up Dexter's life a little bit and then vanish.
Nope. Lila killed Doakes.

It's a shame that Doakes got killed off after 2 seasons and we were stuck with Quinn for 6 seasons.

I never understood why when Doakes caught Dexter at the docks and how he thought he was connected to the case why didn't Dexter just tell him that the Ice Truck killer was his estranged brother that he never met to just entertain his curiosity, give him part of the truth to hide the rest, that way Doakes might lay off him a little bit an never undercover his secret

shite. I forgot about this idiot.
I wish they wouldve kept Doakes around somehow.
In one episode in season 1, he chases and kills a man in cold blood that he recognized as a bad guy from an old covert op mission.
I feel like they could've had someone close to Doakes (he had 4 sisters and a mom) get killed and Doakes hunt the guy down and he get off on a technicality. Then have Doakes catch Dexter killing that guy.
I don't know. Something. Have Doakes catch the guy that got away with killing his family, and have Dexter talk him down from vigilate-ism.
Maybe Doakes couldn't figure out who the killer was, but Dexter figures it out and tells Doakes off the record so he can get revenge.
He was a great character and it was a shame that he left early.

Like others have said, Lyla killed him not Dexter. Dexter was going to let him go before Lyla showed up
