This show used to get a lot of talk the next day. Assuming that ended when Phil died, but it's still a good show.

I'm thinking the show may end in a few seasons with Jonathon Hillstrand saying this is his last season. Sig had a heart attack last year, so who knows how long he'll stay.

They used to have a few nutjobs like Jake Harris and Elliot Neese to carry the outside drama. Now all the captains are fairly stable.

Anyone still watching?

I'm still in it. I guess the connection to the people in the show keeps me going. I don't know if I would consider Keith Colburn or Jake Anderson exactly stable though. I keep waiting for Jake to pop a blood vessel when he yells at people, that kid has some very deep emotional issues.

I occasionally watch but plenty of the captains arent likable.

Sean on the Brenna seemed like he was going to be in over his head but now he kind of comes off as a punk who thinks he has been a captain for 20 years.

The Hillstrand's are very monotonous and too predictable. Watching little segments on them its basically hitting rewind and play over and over. They do seem like good guys though

Keith on the Wizard is an alcoholic and they are rarely likable. The guy was preaching just now on how he has crystal clear vision because he hasnt had a drink in 10 minutes. Yea ok

Jake on the Saga is a short fused psychopath. Unless every pot is full to the brim, he is a whiny a-hole

Wild Bill is a complete a-hole. Not much else to say.

Sig is about the only likable captain on the show right now. You actually feel like you could work with him and none of the shows fame has gone to his head.

I still watch it. It is entertaining. Jake is going to lose his mind early. I like the new young captain of the Brenna A. Sucks Jonathan is calling it quits I liked him and Andy. They were a fun bunch to watch and I imagine work for. There is still plenty of drama bc it is life and death out there. Possibly the only "reality" show that is not scripted.

That's why I said "fairly stable". Keith knows how to run a boat. His alcoholism has been kept in check all season.

Jake is young and his crew takes advantage of him at times because of that. But yes, he's an angry little elf at times.

I don't see this. He was very hard on his own kid, but Zach was lazy and didn't want it. So Bill moved on.

He treated Nick like gold, but got burned by him.

I think he's hard on his crew, but mostly fair. That's a tough job to be captain and they've all gone off the rails and made some dick moves. Sig used to treat Edgar like complete shite.

Maybe not a complete a-hole but he is definitely an a-hole. He even admits that he is the 'grumpy' captain. If he is willing to say that, he knows he is an a-hole.

Yea Nick got over on him bad.

Wild Bill is great. He is hard on anyone who does not work or wants to do the work. He is old school in that everyone should earn their way. I don't see Sean as a punk. I see him very business oriented and does not let people walk on him because he is "green". Jake does whine a lot I do agree on that. I wish they would show moments where he is not freaking out but then that would not be drama. Sig is an arse but he has always been an arse. Will basically shite on his brother and push himself and his crew hard but has always been like that. I like Sig for what's it worth. Keith is in a downward spiral and since he can't drink he lashes out at anyone. Jonathan and Andy are great and I enjoy their antics but they do get the job done. Wonder what happened to the Cornelia Marie with Josh. I thought he did well enough to keep it.

That storyline was snoozeville and Josh came across as a douche who needed his hand held.

That ship was never going to be the same or even close without Phil. He was the story. Him and Freddie.

At times? The dude is absolutely fricking crazy. Even when he is excited happy he is fricking crazy. I would not be shocked at all if we hear news stories one day during filming for next season that he killed one of his deckhands because there was too much squid in the bait bag.

He's legit fricking crazy.

Lets be honest. All the captains are assholes. They have to be. That's how they were brought into the business and how the ones entering the business now will learn to be. It is a tough job and if you are not an a-hole captain you won't have the respect you need to run the boat or the crew.

I'll be honest also. No they dont.

You dont need to be an a-hole to get your crew to do what is needed. If anything, being an a-hole is a good way to get your crew to despise you and do less of what is needed.

Ive worked with 2 captains that fill the role of a-hole captains. One treated me like shite and the other was just a dickhead to the world. frick them. I did the bare minimum and never went out of my way to do anything for them. The other 20 or so captains ive worked with I gladly would do anything they asked within reason and would go out of my way to go the extra mile with other tasks that werent necessarily required.

I think the tv cameras amplifies peoples personalities on there though.

If anything I think the tv cameras being their has made them softer. In the beginning Sig and Keith and other captains hated the camera in their wheelhouse. Keith used to blow up on camera crew and producers all the time. Sig was the same way. Could never get the same crew on the boat each season. Think around season 5 or so they started to understand the power of the show and how other people connected with them. They don't nearly blow up on producers as they used to do when being asked a question. After Phil dying and they saw how viewers were saddened by him dying it affected them. I have never worked on a crab boat in the Bering Sea during those seasons but watching the show from the beginning I understand why they do what they do. Of course the editing will make any person look bad if they want it to.

yea i think the relationships with the producers has changed. i think it was just a relationship that needed the kinks ironed out.

i was never talking about the relationship between the captain and the camera crew. i meant the actual crew working the boat

I know what you meant. I think they work their crew like they were treated when they first got into the crab fishing business. Sean is the only one who is not a complete a-hole but then again the angle they are going for is to show the sympathy side. The young captain who lost his father and basically thrust into the captain chair before maybe he is ready. Plus his dad never crab fished if I am remembering correctly. I think mostly the captains being harsh is what Discovery wants people to see. They want viewers to like and dislike certain people so they get viewers. If all were nice and easy to get along with no one would care about the show. No one would be rooting for a specific person to meet their quota or catch the most crab.

Lost interest when it went from a free for all crab season that ended once the total quota was met, to a divided quota with each ship getting a slice of the pie.
