Ditto. Remarkable man and actor.
His performance as Jefferson Smith is something every American should see at least once in their lifetime.

While we're on the subject, you should give Strategic Air Command a watch if you haven't. Stewart was qualified to fly b-47s and had done so. It's a good movie.

Steve Buscemi was a New York firefighter (Engine 55, Little Italy)from 1980 to 1984 before becoming an actor. After 9/11, he returned to Engine 55 and worked 12-hour shifts at Ground Zero.
Steve Buscemi is the fricking man.
He's not the primadonna in every tabloid sort, he's just quietly a great actor.

Damn. Ivan Drago seems to be a permanent student.

Thanks. I've seen it numerous times.

Kris Kristofferson
In addition to being a famous country singer, and a Golden Globe Award winning actor (also in the Blade series!), he also:
-Played college football, rugby, and boxing
-Earned a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, where he got his masters degree
-Was a chopper pilot in Vietnam and was an Army Ranger
Makes me feel pretty shitty about myself.
I know it's a good post when I have to wiki it to read for myself.
Also

His family disowned him because of this decision [to leave the military] and they never reconciled with him
And

He also worked as a commercial helicopter pilot at that time for a south Louisiana firm called Petroleum Helicopters International (PHI), based in Lafayette, Louisiana. Kristofferson recalled of his days as a pilot, "That was about the last three years before I started performing, before people started cutting my songs ... I would work a week down here [in south Louisiana] for PHI, sitting on an oil platform and flying helicopters. Then I'd go back to Nashville at the end of the week and spend a week up there trying to pitch the songs, then come back down and write songs for another week ... I can remember 'Help Me Make It Through the Night' I wrote sitting on top of an oil platform. I wrote 'Bobby McGee' down here, and a lot of them [in south Louisiana]."

Might be a little more well known, but Matthew McConaughy met the casting director for Dazed and Confused in a bar and he convinced him to come in and audition in the morning. Launched his career.
Apparently he also never really intended on being an actor, he wanted to do more producing/directing.

James Arness grew up in Minneapolis. When World War II broke out, he wanted to become a navy pilot, but his enormous height disqualified him. Instead he joined the Army, and received a Purple Heart after suffering serious injuries to his right leg during the 1944 invasion at Anzio, Italy. His injuries left him hospitalized for almost a year, and during that time he kept hearing from nurses that with his booming voice, he ought to be in radio. He went to work as an announcer and disc jockey at a Minneapolis station, then decided to try his luck in Hollywood.
Arness was Matt Dillon for 20 seasons on Gunsmoke.

That graphic annoys me. Dolph Lundgren is super famous. Why call him Ivan Drago.
