I don't watch any of the late night talk shows, but your link's representation seems dishonest at best. The Late Show is the only show that has improved year over year, and be NBC shows got a huge bump from an the NFL game on Thanksgiving.
quote:

NBC: With help from a huge NFL lead-in on Thanksgiving, both “The Tonight Show” (1.28 in 18-49) and “Late Night” (0.62) were up substantially vs. the previous week. “Tonight” had its best week in nine months, while “Late Night” brought in its best numbers since May.
quote:

For November sweeps, “The Late Show” is the only 11:35 p.m. show that grew year over year. It was up a tenth in both adults 18-49 (0.6 vs. 0.5) and adults 18-34 (0.2 vs. 0.1).

He's too polarizing. Late night needs bland and corny unchallenging humor.

CBS is going to give Colbert years to perfect his show. They're going with him for the long haul

Critics are really pushing his show, too, as the sort of anti-Fallon. It has its share of gags and such, but it's the best show for interviews and is much smarter than the other shows. No doubt it wins an Emmy

Yeah, exactly. Lampooning all politicians is perfect fodder for late night. Castigating only one side of the spectrum while championing the other is just propaganda. People just want to be entertained and distracted by late night not "politically re-educated".

It is the whole "well we can't find anything funny about the Democrats" shite that makes SNL so unfunny these days on political topics.

Really, nothing to lampoon about Obama? Nothing to make fun of over at MSNBC, or Don Lemon? Give me a break.

Falling behind Seth Meyers.

He should go back to comedy central and take over the daily show. I think Trevor Noah is actually pretty funny with his openings but his interviews are cringe worthy.

The problem is no one in my generation watches network late night TV. He should've stayed at comedy central.

And The older generation that all watch late night network TV, none of them like or get Colbert. It sucks.

So the exact same reason why Conan didnt work for Leno?

Someone with a purely cynical motivation to make money needs to pick up on the lesson of Trump (that people are DYING for anyone to come along who is politically incorrect, "tells it like it is", and doesn't apologize) and cash in on really making fun of everyone - Republicans and Democrats, environmentalists and oil companies, gun nuts and SJWs. If someone could set their ideology aside, assemble a team of writers willing to take shots at everyone, and let fly, their show would be huge. Instead, what we have are a bunch of guys and girls who are breathlessly praised as "fearless thought-leaders" by the far left because they just endlessly hammer anyone who isn't "progressive" and then critics wonder why nobody is watching despite their oh so high-and mighty "fearlessness".

Howard Stern should have replaced Dave

Nah, I think what Howard should do when he ends things at Sirius is get a show on HBO that directly follows Oliver where he'll interview one celebrity a week and have complete creative freedom with it.

Really wish Norm could have replaced Dave, and it's apparent from interviews in the 90s and early 00s Dave was grooming him as his replacement. The only thing is he's burnt so many damn bridges in the industry and has zero respect for authority that there's no way in hell they'd allow him to take over something as important as the Late Show.

In their minds, they're equal opportunity satirists. Horation Sans has gone on and on about how they let Bush II off of the hook and didn't attack him and the Republicans hard enough.

Not surprised since Colbert is dumb and unfunny, but I am surprised he's behind fricking Seth Meyers though. That is the most unfunny person that has ever walked this earth.

Yeah, Meyers fricking blows. The PC Principal bullshite he pulled earlier this year with Caitlyn Jenner where he said he was proud to live in a country where they no longer had to make jokes about it was pathetic. What a pussy. Jerry Seinfeld had to go on there and call him a wuss to his face in order for him to back down from his comment, which further proved Jerry's point. That's sad that anyone loses to that clown in late night ratings.

Colbert though is a legitimately good interviewer though and the best in the late night bracket by a long shot.

I quickly got tired of him always having one political figure on as guest.

To be fair, his debut did occur right in the middle of this obscenely early presidential campaigning. Plus, given his years at the Daily Show and the Colbert Report I imagine it's what he is comfortable with and where all his contacts lead to. Hopefully, it'll get better as the years past and the election in a year is over.

Carolla is awesome, but he would not go against Kimmel.

Yeah, no way he would compete against his best friend simply out of principle. Plus Carolla doesn't want to be held accountable for anything he says, which CBS would make him do so.

Sounds exactly like what happened to Conan. Besides the whole Leno being a douche thing.

Conan was in a very special situation that set him up for failure. In essence, NBC gave him the job without really giving him the job. And yeah, Leno was no innocent, despite his obnoxious and phony "everyman" persona through which he tried to paint himself as a powerless lackey.

Also, Colbert isn't going anywhere. The only numbers that matter is in the demo, where Colbert does well. Plus live ratings are only part of the picture. To use Conan as an example again, his live numbers seem weak, but TBS monetizes the hell out of his online audience, and as a result he got renewed through 2018.

Only old people are watching talk shows live.
