Buildings outside the car window fly by.

You know what's coming next...a side collision into the protagonists car.

Why is this so overdone nowadays?

To be surprising? I've learned to sniff it out from a mile away.

What was the first movie to use this? What movies use it effectively? Poorly?

I remember first seeing this shot used in Another Earth, I may be mistaken though.

The variation of this they used in Whiplash was really well done just because it didn't follow this exact formula.

Six Feet Under pilot in 2001 was a good one. It caught me off guard. Doubt it was the first though.

It's like the medicine cabinet in the bathroom shot. You always know someone will be in the mirror when they close it.

I think I first remember it in Meet Joe Black, although it was a direct hit on the person, not the car.

No Country for Old Men has it too.

Also, a VW commercial where it was used pretty effectively.

Do you read TV Tropes.com? It's awesome.
