The Arthur stuff has been done so many times. Hopefully they can do a fresh take on it but seeing as how they are going back to the 15th century stuff I'm not sure.
I would have kind of liked to see them do something with maybe Bernard Cornwell's take on the legends.

Huh. I guess so.
Not sure if I like this casting... how many black wizards were there in the British Isles in the 400s?

Exactly what I was thinking. Those books would make a great set of movies.

I'm assuming it will be set in the middle or dark ages, right? I guess they could set it during that time period and just say that Merlin is from some far off country, and not a native Brit. Idris could pull of a good Merlin as long as they find a way to explain why a black guy is in middle age England.
Yeah I guess it wouldnt be that hard to explain why a black guy is in 5th century Britain. But some explanation would prob be desirable, and I hope it doesn't come off as contrived.

The Cornwell books are genius, although the main character Derfel is kind of disappointing.

so in this one, is Arthur gonna pull out a sword that he forgot he had the whole time?

Guy Ritchie doing a King Arthur film? No. Just...no.

So it looks like King Arthur will have to make some difficult decisions.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong. Vince Vaughn couldn't open a film on his own. He had a good run, sure, but be real. If he had tried to run a legit drama, he would have flopped. Celebrities that are A-List are very few in number. A-List is your DiCaprios and Bales if the acting world.
The whole A-List thing is based off bankability.

In my opinion, a "fresh take" isn't needed here. How about we do King Arthur according to the legends? Now, I know that King Arthur is pretty much the ultimate "open source" material from literature and no one take is the definitive take.
But for once, I would like to see this done with unabashed adherence to medieval ideal. All too often, we see people trying to take one small part of Arthur and tell the whole story from that angle, from the female-centric "Mists of Avalon" to many different Merlin-centric works to works that modernize the characters to a high degree, even moving them to the present day.
Check out this list of Arthurian interpretations that include so many of these "fresh, new takes" on Arthurian legend:

I dunno... it frustrates me. Arthur and his associated characters and stories sort of belong to everyone, and every person is going to have a different thing they want from the legends.
I'm just saying what I want: hardcore chivalry, knights fighting each other, monsters, grail quests, magic... and frick modernism.
"Excalibur" came the closest to this on film, but it can be done better. If I were to do it, I would start here for inspiration, but not to copycat it.

Not difficult at all. Many were brought over with the Legions, and many more were brought over as slaves (Roman and barbarian).
Also, frick anyone who uses the term "dark ages."
On a related note, there needs to be an Ivanhoe movie.

Arthur wasn't mentored by a "Merlin-like figure." He was mentored by Merlin....and Elizabeth Olsen will be Guinevere?
I think I'll pass.

I kinda agree. (Though I am not sure whether Merlin was a Wizard or a Druid which I think were the priestly castes of different groups - Celts, Saxons and Danes maybe?)
Interestingly, in the Cornwell books, Arthur's most powerful and effective commander (or warlord) was a Nubian which was explained perfectly and fit right into the story.

Yes Sagramor was easy to do, bc he was a warrior and books have more time to explain details such as this. But Merlin was certainly not black, he was Druid. I think that is the most logical and natural identity for Merlin.
