They are really starting to ware off on me. I used to like any of the singing competitions, but haven't gotten into any for about a year now. The idol thread has me interested about last night's show, so I may watch that, but I've only watched very brief parts of this year, so yeah, it's a good point, I've thought about this recently, at least for me, I'm beginning to actually kind of get annoyed at them. Idol for instance: they start out kind of likable, but then the closer to the finals they get they become a pack of pricks.

If it is a show in which people are just living.. Then no. shite like Jersey Shore is for idiots.

I do like shite like Pawn Stars because it does provide interesting information.

We obviously have some RW vs RR fans on this board. I'm waiting for them to show up and tell us how awesome that show is.

I haven't seen it since the 90's probably.

The problem is they call them reality shows, when they are staged or directed to act certain ways to get ratings.

I think a lot of people hear the term "reality show" and immediately think the show is expecting the viewers to believe the cameras were randomly filming and whatever happens is what they are going to put on TV.

That wouldn't even be possible and it would be risky for a network to do. There has to be some staging, scripting, etc involved.

I think reality TV is meant more along the lines that the people in the show isn't actors/actresses. They are real in terms of what they are doing is real to them.

Of course Pawn Stars is "staged" to a point, but could those dudes star in a blockbuster movie?

I think people watch these shows to get away from reality. There might be a few out there that think they're real and unscripted, but most of us see them for what they are. If people enjoy themselves watching them, go for it. Better than watching 24 hour cable news, that's for damn sure.

I like to watch American Pickers, American Restoration, Full Metal Jousting, Deadliest Catch, Survivor, and Amazing Race. I also watch Swamp People and AxMen because I get a kick out of how they portray cajuns. If anyone considers me a moron...

Nope. Don't watch any of them. They simply don't interest me.

There are at least four different categories.

Dirty Jobs, Hell's Kitchen, Bar Rescue, and those type of shows I don't even consider "reality shows". They are just TV shows with real people and not actors.

Survivor, Fear Factor, Wipe Out, etc.

I would consider those more like game shows. If they win a prize at the end, it is really just game show evolution.

Kardashians, Jersey Shore, Housewives, etc. IMO are the only real reality shows because the camera literally follows then around and the audience watches them live. Obviously, they are edited as well as put in certain situations or attend events for the show, because who wants to watch someone play video games or watch tV for hours.

Those shows I have no need for.

I don't know what to call shows like Pawn Stars and Storage Wars that are trying to pass themselves off as reality but are clearly staged and scripted to anyone with a lick of sense. Oddly enough, I like a few of these types of shows, even though I know they are full of it.

Nice summary. Some shows do seem to straddle the line on those catagories, though.

For instance, I watch American Chopper. Probably the only "reality show" I've ever ben intereted in. I like to watch them design and build bikes, but there is also the personal story lines and conflicts. I'm probably naive, but I tend to think that most of the personality and conflict stuff is real on that show. It helps that there are some likeable people on the show.

That's the main reason I stopped watching the show. It was cool to watch them build bikes, but the people on the show were idiots. It's the same for Sons of Guns. All scripted crap.

American Restoration - has some cool stuff that I like to watch them tear down and restore, but I could do without the goofy dialogue.

Shark Tank - I like to hear the thought process behind some new products and the sharks take on the likelihood of success. Seems to be less bullshite on this show as they are putting up their own money and they are in it for a profit.

I like watching some of the game show reality shows, like Survivor, Big Break (although it's gone WAY downhill), Top Shot, and a few others because there is a point in the competition.

Some of the reality shows that show different lines of work, like Deadliest Catch, Ax Men, Dirty Jobs, American Restoration, they have some redeeming qualities and are generally entertaining to me. I know there are moments that are probably scripted, like this past week when the S&S boys pushed the anger management therapist out of the boat, but I don't mind that. I can separate the real from the scripted, most of the time. The problem with this type of show is that it is often duplicated and watered down. How many shows about towing services do we need? Noodling? Storage Auctions?

I find some of the celebrity reality shows entertaining at times. I admit, I can't stand Donald Trump, but Celebrity Apprentice is a show I watch weekly. I like that it raises money for charity, but we see sides of many celebrities we've never seen before. I knew John Rich was a pretty good musician, but I'll bet you he won a lot of fans with how he conducted himself on the show last year. And I'll bet many people who had no opinion of Debbie Gibson before hate her guts now.

Yeah, there's a lot of crap out there to make fun of in reality-land. But honestly, there's a lot of that going on with sitcoms and dramas, as well.

Top Shot was fun to watch for a while. At least when you got put up for elimination, you had a chance to "shoot" your way out of elimination.

I watch the competition only in Top Shot and they are usually pretty bad arse. I fast-forward through all the practice and drama in the house as none of those personalities are really worth getting to know.

Top Shot has some of the best slow-motion camera work on TV.
