I haven’t watched a CBS show in years. I’m not a big Star Trek guy but I wanted to give Discovery a watch.

You can’t even watch most of their shows with provider logins. They have most of their shows locked behind a pay wall for some $5/month service and that’s the only way you can get them even if you have a provider. They also have them locked from things like the DTV apps.

Great plan.

Good luck with that.

I was never a big Star Trek fan either, but really liked Discovery a lot.

Five bucks. Half the price of a movie will get you four hours of Star Trek. Seems like a bargain to me.

Its a smart model. They are probably still the king of network tv with their shows like Big Band Theory, NCIS, Blue Bloods, Elementary, etc...

The people that watch those shows arent the ones that are cutting the cord. They skew to an older audience, and thats why they win.

This new thing they are trying is to get the people that have already cut the cord. It might work. It might not, but doing it isnt taking away any of their viewers.

My guess is that they're taking their first steps towards exclusive online streaming content like Netflix and Amazon. And they have to start with something and if they put it on regular CBS then they don't have a draw for their exclusive online content.

I don't know if it's a good strategy or not. But I have heard you can watch all Star Trek episodes on there I think.

They think Star Trek nerds will pay a monthly fee to watch the new show. They're probably right but once they've seen it, then what?

NetFlix covered 75% of the production costs to get the international streaming rights on Star Trek Discovery so they don't have to make money like normal on the show for it to be successful. That's allowing them to try and force people behind the pay wall.

CBS has been like this forever. Back when Hulu started they were practically the only network not participating. They think they can do their own service eventually but they're wrong. People will subscribe to 2-4 services tops. CBS All Access isn't making the shortlist for most people.

I’m fine with them locking down their content for people without provider logins.

Locking down their content from people that pay already is double dipping.

1) You don't pay CBS anything.
2) This isn't available to the local affiliates so it really is "their" content more than it normally is. I'm surprised the local affiliates haven't been making a fuss about it.

Its funny, my wife and I were talking about CBS with some friends the other night. None of us at the table watch 1 show on CBS or have for the past 5 years, yet they kill it in the ratings.

I dont know anyone who watches a show on CBS. the Demo must 50+

You might have some that pay the money to access the Big Brother live feeds then just forget to cancel the service after.....and before you know it....it is the next season of BB so you keep it. And the cycle continues.

At least that is the case with me

You would think they could make more money in advertising by having more viewers on their app, than by charging people for the app.
I don't know why any cord cutter would ever pay for cbs, and that is the target audience for the app.

Big Bang and NCIS are two of the highest rated shows on TV.

Back when I watched Big Brother CBS was pro at shutting down free live streams of the feeds. Boxing PPV should hire those guys.

That's the point I was making. It's the number one network but I don't know one person who watches it

Yes. Which makes no sense, but they hold viewers hostage all the time to get their payments increased.

No.

WAFB gets money from the cable systems that carry their channel. CBS does not. Now WAFB does have to pay CBS to carry CBS programming. (It used to be the other way around. Networks would pay local affiliates to carry their content.)

As for why the affiliates do not complain to the networks about their streaming services bypassing their contract to provide the network content locally... The affiliates do complain. There was a time when some of the networks allowed the local stations to sell commercial time on the streaming in their area, but that came to an end. It's an ongoing battle. (Imagine if you had the exclusive contract to own McDonald's restaurants in your town, then McDonald's began to send in corporate food trucks to sell directly to your customers. That's where the local stations are now.)

I cut the cord, and have no cable service to my house besides internet. I have a fire tv, and every single app i have requires a provider login to watch shows. If you don't have one, on most you can only watch limited amounts of stuff. Very limited. So it's not just CBS.

The difference is if you use a login for the ABC, NBC, Fox, TNT, TBS, FX, Disney, NickJr, etc app, you get to watch all their shows. even if you don't have a cable subscription to log in, you can still watch some shows on these apps.
CBS doesn't care if you have a cable login, if you want to use their app, $5.99/month.

It is just CBS, well, and HBO and other PREMIUM channels.
