Wife is currently watching War and Peace. Napoleon and every single Russian speak with British accents. What's the rationale? I can understand the desire to not use subtitles, but why British accents for all. Is it to give the appearance of honoring that historical era? I think it's downright silly.

Which accents would you suggest?

That's all there is to it. I was probably an almost totally European production.

No, I've seen well known American actors use British accents in roles in which they weren't Brits. (No link)

But given they made the decision to have the characters speak in English, what is the suggested accent the OP would have used?

British is the general European accent. Americans can't tell the difference.

American

Why would that be any more or less defensible/appropriate than British (or any other)?

Is this really any less silly than having a bunch of American, British and Scottish actors speak a fake Russian accent while speaking English in Hunt For Red October?

Awesome movie btw.

It was made by BBC, so doesn't seem unusual for it to be mostly British actors

No,
just down the street
the Celinto Catayente Towers. It's quite a fine example, in fact. I recommend that next time you're up that way that you drop in and take a gander at it yourself.
