Bone Tomahawk - Could the story have been better?

First, I loved the last 30 minutes of the movie. One scene in particular is extremely horrific and unexpected, which oddly I compare to another excessively brutal scene from a Kurt Russell flick - Death Proof. Same impact. Totally shocking when you see it for the first time.
However, I'm torn on whether or not I believe this movie should've been a dark comedy. In my opinion the dark comedy seemed very out of place with the story, especially the old man's character.
I just wonder what this movie could have been if the story had been written as a serious drama/horror rather than a dark comedy/horror.
For example, imagine if the writer(s) of Bone Tomahawk had approached it as seriously as, say, 3:10 to Yuma or Open Range. Imagine how much more impactful the cave scenes would've been had the first hour of the movie spent less time on dark/odd comedy and more time on character development and plot.
Imagine if the cave scenes happened in Open Range. That may be one of the most shocking movies ever created, but in a good way.
Sure, there's a big audience for cult classic dark comedy/horror, but I feel Bone Tomahawk for as good as it was could've been far better.
Missed opportunity. Would like to see a future remake with a story rewrite focused on a serious plot and dramatic character development.

How was it a dark comedy? Is that anything like how The Witch was dark suspense?

Couldn't you have said this shite in your other Bone Tomahawk thread?

You realize they made this movie for under 3 million right ? Be thankful it was watchable

I get that it was a very well done low budget movie. But it doesn't cost extra to request a script which has polished dialogue, a serious tone (from dark comedy to serious drama), and serious character development.

It doesn't cost extra to rewrite the script?
I don't think it's about the money. I just think it's hard as shite to nail a script. You make it sound so simple.
ETA: Although money could be a factor of they weren't 100% happy with the final product. Rewriting the script and doing reshoots might have been cost prohibitive.

That's not what I meant to say. What I'm saying is that it should've originally been written as a serious western drama/horror rather than a dark comedy.
In my opinion, it would've been even better as a serious western which in the end transformed into a horror story.

I gotcha. I never really got a dark comedy vibe to it. There were some humorous parts but I don't think it converted it into a comedy. I'm fine with the way it was written, although the ending was a little weak and predictable (other than the scene that will stick with me forever).

I'll never get that scene out of my head. I was expecting cannibals and graphic scenes, but that was just hard to watch.
I can't imagine going out like that! Although ISIS is probably doing similar shite in Syria and Iraq which makes me even more sick.

I honestly can't remember any other scene from a movie that had a physical effect on me.

No. Just an uneasy feeling.

I actually turned my head while grimacing...and then I rewound and watched it again.
