The Graduate is arguably a Top 10 film...and one of the best examples of a sublime dramedy.

And apart from the dialogue, the setting and the times, it's a brilliantly shot film...with a score that perfectly matches what you are seeing on film.

Only the setting is a product of it's time.

That same youth angst after graduating from college or high school and not knowing what to do - has been copied ENDLESSLY since The Graduate and they make a new movie about it every year. Hell, they tried to copy The Graduate with the Summer of 42 right away. They are always using that same formula...up to this day. Hasn't aged well? That's like saying Die Hard hasn't aged well but love the movies that copied it.

Graduate hasn't aged well? That's like saying the Beatles, Chuck Berry, Hank Williams and Stones classic hits suck now. You know, the folks the set the foundation that set a plethora of copy-cats.

I guess it's all taste.

funny how there are pages and pages of disagreements among films featuring white people (with some really egregious frickups) but one film with black people gets snubbed or no black people get nominated for a couple of years and it is "racism"

How about it is "another difference of opinion"?

That's the problem with these threads, someone will disagree with pretty much any winner. The truly egregious ones though are things Citizen Kane or Raging Bull losing to mostly forgotten movies.

Well said.

I have seen Titanic more times than the other two films you listed and my first name is not Gabriel. Also...you left out the other Oscar front runner: L.A. Confidential, which I have watched more times than Good Will Hunting and As Good as it Gets combined.

I don't see how, unless your mother bought the dvd and forced you to watch it with her. GWH and GAIG are on TV all the time, LA con and T are never.

You must live on some planet where Titanic is never on TV and you need ovaries to appreciate it on any level. Drop by Earth one of these days. We have beer and stuff.

Are you like 12 or something?

I own both L.A. Confidential and Titanic. I like those movies more than Good Will Hunting and As Good as It Gets.

Not to derail the thread, but not a single minority getting nominated for any of the 20 possible acting slots over the past two years is absurd. The problem isn't the winners, or even the Oscars really, but how few roles are going to minorities despite being in a more diverse country. It ain't 1950 anymore.

But since you bring it up, Driving Miss Daisy winning in 1990 while Do the Right Thing wasn't even nominated is perhaps the greatest Oscar travesty ever. Or I don't know... friggin' Glory came out in 1989 as well. Not nominated for Best Picture.

Youre generally right about snubs in the past although people here will never admit it. That said, the Academy has more than made up for it in recent years and one year is not cause for some outrage. It would be more demeaning to have some quota system in place.

Secondly, Hollywood blacks seem to think they have some monopoly on the minority roles that we are supposed to be outraged which is outrageous itself. This whole faux outrage isn't about 'hey where are all the multicultural films and actors?,' it's 'Hey why don't more black people get nominated.'

Look, everyone is always trying to fight me on facts.

LINK /

GWHunting will be on TV, 4 times in the next 3 days

LINK /

Titanic 2 times in the next 14 days

LINK /

LA Confidential, ZERO times in the next 14 days

But I concede because I'm obviously wrong, as no one agrees with me, except maybe TV scheduling execs.

So you are 12. Okay. Thanks for letting us know.

Because only a 12-year-old would use TV schedules to argue his/her point.

"It comes on TV more so it obviously must be better!"

The Godfather comes on zero times in the next 14 days, so obviously Good Will Hunting is the better movie.

I agree with you about using TV scheduling as being foolish......

But GWH is better than the Godfather.

I actually thought Robin Williams was the better actor in the movie.

never seen the Godfather or Scarface in their entirety. I think they were cool when they came out, but being that their model was replicated by movies after, they both seem boring and uninspired.

Nevermind that frequency on TV is not solely a product of popularity or quality, but is also a product of whether whoever owns the rights to said movie has sold them to various TV networks, one TV network or refuses to sell the rights. Or only allows to be shown a limited amount of times, as in the case of Its a Wonderful Life which is only on once or twice a year now, where as in the past it was shown to death.

Wow you sound like an idiot. A) Comparing the Godfather to Scarface, B) the rest of your statement, C) saying the rest of your statement after admitting you haven't seen either. Shall I keep going?
