Bigger Oscar Sham: Shakespeare in Love over Saving Private Ryan or Annie Hall

Over Star Wars.

neither are particularly egregious imo. Annie Hall is considered a classic. Shakespeare in Love is worse but outside of the beach landing I was never that enamored with SPR. Shakespeare in Love still didn't deserve best picture.

What about Ordinary People winning in 1981 and Empire Strikes Back wasn't even nominated.
Probably the biggest Oscar frick up.

Over Star Wars.
Neither one.
Crash in 05 is still one of the worst. Marty too.

Shakespeare in Love is really good.

Kramer Vs Kramer over Apocalypse Now was a bigger sham.

Easily Shakespeare in Love. It was a so so movie and how it won Best Picture over Saving Private Ryan is beyond me. Really dumb of the voters. Annie Hall, however, was a actually a really good movie and I can see how it won.

This again?
Both Oscars are right.
Annie Hall more than Shakespeare...but they are right.

Neither one of those would be what I would consider "shams." Shakespeare in Love and Annie Hall are both damn good films.
I would say the biggest Oscar sham in recent memory was Crash winning over the four films it was nominated against.

People will be watching Saving Private Ryan 100 years from now and people still talk about it. It is a landmark movie. I haven't come across Shakespeare In Love when channel surfing my entire life.
Travesty.
SPR is an eternal classic that changed movie making and Shakespeare In Love is some forgotten horseshite that won because the Weinstein machine had the Oscar push thing to an art back then.

SPR was a temporary classic in testing out your home theater sound system...

By that logic either Dracula or Frankenstein should have beat out Cimarron.

Annie Hall is a film. Star Wars is a popcorn movie.
Terms of Endearment over The Right Stuff is the real shame.

Chicago over Gangs of New York
* This one was bad
SPL over Saving Private Ryan
* This one is unforgivable
Rocky over Taxi Driver
* I love Rocky but come on?
My Green Valley over Citizen Kane
*CK is a masterpiece ahead of its time
Crash is up there for least deserving films of all times. I would add Fargo and the Graduate as films that got screwed by the Academy

Making Harrison Ford read "Shakespeare in Love" instead of "SPR" was the clincher for me.

You can argue the same but opposite thing for Avatar.
Avatar has had a bigger impact on the movie industry than SPR. And a small little "war" film beat it for best film.

Double Indemnity is one of my GOAT favorite movies.
